I want an honest assessment from united fans.I know its hard when a player plays for your team but lets forget all the nonsense from pundits and some fans that he is as good as Messi and ronaldo because he tracks back, lets look at what he has achieved especially in the premiership and champions league.
Im not going to assess him internationally because since his teenage years he hasnt been that great and other world stars like Messi and Ronaldo are also pants.
A player like Rooney is hard to judge as his off field behavious is atrocious and clouds judgement.I know Scholes was a great player but even if you were to hold a gun to my head I would say Gerrad because I hated scholes darkside and awful tackles.
To judge Rooney lets look at the fact that he hasnt even come close to matching Henry achievements in europe even though Henry was said to be a big game bottler.Rooney has lost out to Drogba several times in terms of goal counts in the division, yes he has been played out of position but Messi is also shifted by Guardiola but never stops scoring.
Where does rooney stand in the international game.Is he overhyped like Beckham was and has he peaked?

drogba? he scores goals and what?
rooney is the heartbeat of united, he creates, motivates and scores, an all round magnificent player
dont compare him to drogba
give him a few years and he will surpass henry, he's still only 25 and has achieved so much already
his goal today and in the champions league final shows his class, he may have goal droughts but usually contributes nonetheless
a class player but has to carry united too much due to that shoddy midfield, man utd cannot afford to lose rooney. but they cannot afford to waste his potential with an inferior midfield.

From a neutral (Dundee Utd fan) I think Rooney is quality as he contributes so much more than just goals to the team. His work rate and link up play is exceptional and his range of passing and creativity is brilliant. On the other note from the original post. Paul Scholes is the best player to have ever played in the English Prem closely followed by Ryan Giggs. It is hard to compare I know as they are different ages but at his peak Scholes was pure class. No coincidence that English national team struggled after he retired.
