Take It To The Next Level?

Hello fellow Reds - After the club being in the 'headlines' for all the wrong reasons these past few weeks I thought I'd assess the current footballing side of things at the halfway point in the season.

Sitting in 6th place and only 3 points off the Champions League places is not a bad situation to find ourselves in. With the upheaval of a bitter takeover, a 'new' manager and a squad that has seen a lot of arrivals and departures things could have been a lot worse. We seem to have a good coaching staff in place and from what I see and read good owners in charge.

With that in mind surely this transfer window must be a very important one? Notoriously difficult to get your targets in January I know, but surely we need reinforcing? A lack of guile in midfield, Lucas's injury, Suarez's ban, no real threat from the flanks and an under achieving strikeforce surely must be addressed if possible.

Fair dues though to Kenny and his team and the squad. While obviously lacking in quality in key areas they have managed to get us this far halfway through the season. Can we 'Take It To The Next Level' in this transfer window and in the remaining games this season to secure a Champions League spot and increase our chances of getting the type of players we need to add real QUALITY to the current squad?

What do we need?, who do we need? and how do we get them?

I'd like everyone's thoughts

I know perfectly well where is from, which is why I told you. I can also tell you, my geography skills are very good and that doesn't change because somebody lives in a different country now. Born in Poland to two Polish parents, makes him Polish.

Podolski has a lot more to his game than goals though. His passing is fantastic and he can score from all over. He has pace and his link up play is good. Podolski would be a great signing for us.

Darren Bent is all about goals but if that is gonna push us into the Champions League, then it's worth 25m.

De Jong would cost over 10m. Not only that but City wouldn't sell and with the wages he's on, he wouldn't leave.

I also know Podolski's stats, they're readily available on Wikipedia.

Who would i buy? No-one! Give our players a full season to settle. We are playing well, just not getting the final goal. I would let Carroll have this extended run in the first team to get used to playing the Liverpool way and see where we are at the end of the season.

Like you say, it's difficult buying in the Jan window so why risk it?!

Because if we don't risk it, others will and we will be left out of the Champions League and will fall even further behind.

Podolski was playing against the same sides in the same league when at bayern and the other club(s)

If he didn't score more at bayern it probably just means he didn't gel properly with his teammates, not that he didn't step up or similar.

It was the same opposition so just as hard to score.

Well we'll have to disagree on podolskis nationality and the fact that you think Darren bent is worth 25 million!

Err there is nothing to disagree, it is a fact that if he was born in Poland, to Polish parents he is Polish!

I don't think Darren Bent alone is worth 25m, however, if his signing took us to the Champions League, then he is worth much more.

This is why you find a better player worth x, whereas a worse one is worth x+10m. It is about how much he is worth to you and the club selling, not exactly how good he is.

'others will and we will be left out of the Champions League and will fall even further behind.'

Risk it - as in it's a risk. We have a team which is not scoring the goals it SHOULD - no personel required, just the current need to start hitting the net more! Buying players in no garentee, just as keeping the current isn't, but i would rather stick with the current plan - I hate all this 'buy more' attitude every 6 months, lets have some faith and commitment with the player who we only bought 6 months ago

I am the first person to get behind our players but we are missing players. You can see it from our play. We have Lucas out and nobody decent for the right, as Kuyt seems to have regressed. We also lack a poacher-type up front.

We need to gamble, as possibility of losing out on Champions League football would set us back a couple of years again, as others teams strengthen.

There is the makings of a good squad. When Gerrard or even Bellamy play it's easy to see that they are a totally different class to our other players in the same positions.

We are 4 top, top quality players away from having a squad capable of competing on all fronts.

We really need to try and find the 'right' players. I think we need some reinforcements now otherwise we will be left behind - playing catch-up against the others

But you may find that you get just as much out of a player settling in for another 6 months as you would a better player settling in for their first 6 month, part way though a season.

Just a thought - i'm happy eaither way to be honest as long as we keep playing the way we are, i think all will come good - happy days
