I think we all hope that the fact he will get a run of games in Luis's absence will allow us to finally see the player who performed so well for Newcastle last season.
Question is - have we seen anything in his most recent performances to suggest he's heading in the right direction?
He worked hard last Wednesday against City but his touch and all-round play weren't great. Will more game time solve the problem?
Me thinks the jury is out for now.
Thoughts?
Will Carroll come good?

it doesnt help that when he plays he is feeding off long balls and has no support. he simply doesnt fit into kennys tactics..he was awesome at newcastle, hope he comes good at lfc very soon.

He will come good, but we have to get past the price tag. The price tag suggests that he should be world class, he will never be world class, but he has all the ability to become a good premiership striker.
He's lacking confidence at the moment and his every move is being scutinised. He need's time. The type of player he is, the better he will get with age.
Some of his play is clumsy, but I've seen glimpses of how he links up with player and his hold up play and he does have the ability.
All the goals he's scored so far this season have been with his feet, so I think he is more than just a player you lump the ball into. The Exeter and Oldham goals were excellent strikes. The Everton goal was the product of some good build up play where we got behind Everton to the byline and crossed it and the West Brom goal was from a nice counter attack. He's also hit the woodwork 3 times this season, a goal wrongly disallowed against Sunderlnd so he's getting in to the right places. Bit more luck and composure needed and he could have had 7 or 8 goals this season. If he had that many, would we be complaining?

The way you set up is too easy for the centre halfs to deal with, surely a quick clever player playing tight to him like Toshack/Keegan back in the day would be the answer? His first touch was much better at Newcastle so that can only be confidence and Downing doesn't help with the terrible service into him.Has he ever hit a cross in early before the centre backs have set themselves?

I think Carroll is ok shooting rather than heading bad crosses. keep the ball on the ground, it should be more controlable, keep another attacker up with him( so we need someone fast) play Bellamy or gerrard in the middle, get more players into the box, winger to Andy is not working.

What has really concerned me is his first touch... or lack of. Against City it was horrific watching the ball bounce off him as regularly as it did.
Whist Luis is out, this is his chance to show why Kenny has placed his confidence in him. I hope he doesn't blow it, but if his last game is anything to go by, he has a mountain to climb.
However, kenny has a great record in forming striking partnerships. Let's see how he has done in the remainder of the season before losing faith. He hasn't done well, but the league is littered with players who have failed to impress when they are young and playing for a bigger club.
He needs to start performing now though, because Kuyt , another striker option, is also having a stinker of a season thus far.

I think its ridiculous to set the team up completely around a player that has a poor first touch, no pace and suspect positioning, I have seen enough this season and last to suggest that his finishing isn't that great, the occasional decent strike is the bare minimum I would expect from any premier league player let alone a striker and thats before we even mention the price tag

"Heading in the right direction". Now you are havin a laff. he cannot jump from a standing start always seems to get under the ball and then falls flat on his rrrrrrrr,s.

It's funny really, had his two very arguable offside goals stood, and the three times he's hi t the post found there way to the back of the net, then I doubt as many people would be even worrying.
He has been quite isolated and a bit unlucky, and an easy target at 35m. Give the guy at least until the end of the season.

Charlionso,
We said that last season though, he's a fifth of the way through his contract as the most expensive British footballer of all time, and he can't even get in an England side with the worst selection of strikers in the last 30 years - I am done trying to defend him and hoping for the best, it's not happening and every game he plays his value is decreasing IMO
