Nope. I was told on other articles that I didn't need to though.

I would strongly recommend you do. It's so, so much better having played the previous two with the multitude of decisions that will carry over and affect your own story/gameplay, rather than having the default which makes out that Shepard is a bit of a diplomatic/political douche!

You'll also have a greater understanding of the story and characters which will make you appreciate 3 so much more.

If you have it on PC or 360 you can get 1 and 2. If on PS3 you can only get 2 but it comes with an interactive back comic allowing you to make the big choices from the first game.

Seriously consider playing the other games first. You won't be disppointed.

I'm still so peeved they never brought 1 out on the PS3 as apparently the third game is so much better with two games' worth of small and large decisions carrying over, but I at least played 1 through on PC first.

I actually prefer 2 overall to 3, so I think you'll be glad you played it first. Can also wiki the first game's story if the comic isn't enough to fill you in. Have fun, and welcome to be series!
