I have just been reading Tim Vickery's Blog on the BBC website
http://www.bbc.co.uk/blogs/timvickery/2012/02/bielsa_bouncing_back_at_bilbao.html
I always find this an interesting read but one thing struck me this time - talking about Marcelo Bielsa (former Argentina coach) he says
'Bielsa believes that the role of the captain is to represent the squad - and on that basis he usually lets the players vote to determine who should lead them out.'
I think this is a really good idea, this would instill pride in the role as the player knows he is representing his peers.
Do you think this would work at Leeds?
If yes - who would the players vote for? I would guess Snoddy.
Club Captain

The whole captain thing is an obsession in this country and I don’t get it. Would Barca be the same team if Puyol or Xavi wasn’t captaining them? Yes, of course they would.
Would Spain still be European and World Champions if it wasn’t for Casillas? Yes, of course they would.
Who cares who calls ‘heads’ or ‘tails’ it’s about what you do on the pitch. Beckham was never vocal. Was he a good captain? I think so because he led by example on the pitch.
They should just give it to the player with the most caps……which is……Ashley Cole…..(ehhhh…actually…forget that idea!)

i agree with the point that we seem to be obsessed with captains in this country but i think it is more the type of captain - we think it should be a Terry Butcher, Paul Ince 'bleeding for the cause' type player.
i would argue that captains are important in the rest of the world as they are the player that best represents the ethos of club and leads by example on the field.
Using the Puyol and Xavi example at Barca - both these players are Barca through and through.
Would Barca play better if they werent captains, no. but do they represent Barca as a club, what they stand for and how they play - i would say Yes.
i personally do not care who captains my team just so long as they know what the club stands for, what the players/team is trying to achieve and how the team plays.
The players should know who amongst their ranks best represents that philosophy and therefore who should be captain. Thinking about it so should the manager.
Oh and as for Ashley Cole - no no no that is just wrong!

Beckham was an example on and off the pitch.
If it was done on the most vocal player... Neil 'Big Gob' Kilkenny would win hands down. Never shuts up.... but that's the aussies for you
