Week One - Results

Arsenal v Bolton
Bolton tried today, but didn't quite have enough to earn a point against Arsenal. They kept it tight with the defense playing well and Arsenal playing good football but unable to make the breakthrough. Their best chance came to Van Persie, who forced an excellent save from Jaaskalinien from a curling shot inside the box. However, Arsenal brought on Barrios and his knockdown header late in the game created the chance for Silva who blasted home a late goal which was cruel on Bolton, who had defended well.

Arsenal 1-0 Bolton
Silva 89

Aston Villa v Wigan
A very good game here, and Bent's clinical finishing was what won it for Villa. Wigan have improved their side with some good signings including Parker and Welbeck, who both grabbed a goal each either side of half time. However, Bent's finishing was clinical as he opened the scoring in three minutes, and grabbed a late goal. Cahill will walk away with the plaudits though after assisting both goals and scoring a header from a corner late on. Wigan did try and set up well, but Aston Villa have a stronger side with better players.

Aston Villa 3-2 Wigan
Bent 3, Bent 75, Cahill 88; Parker 40, Welbeck 53

Chelsea v Sunderland
Sunderland put in a good performance today but it wasn't enough to stop a super Chelsea attacking game. Torres and Gerrard showed excellent form like they once were at Liverpool and got a goal each early on the game. Gerrard powered past Cattermole and he was then chopped down, Torres stepping up to score the penalty. Gerrard then scored himself from a free kick when Robben was brought down. Sunderland tried to force their way back into the game, but found Cech in great form, making saves from Gyan and Malbranque. Kuyt pulled one back in the closing stages from a Sessengnon corner, but it was too little, too late.

Chelsea 2-1 Sunderland
Torres 12, Gerrard 30; Kuyt 85

Everton v Tottenham
A very tight game in the opening exchanges and Bale created the first chance when he skipped past Richards and crossed for Llorente who beat Jagielka in the air to power home the opening goal. After that Tottenham struggled to create as the Everton midfield really closed them down well. Adebayor and Gervinho both missed good chances and Given played a long ball over everyone which gave Adebayor a golden chance, but Abbiati made an excellent save. Everton finally equalised just after the hour when Nasri was caught in possession and Modric got past Huddlestone and teed up Park to score. Tottenham tried to win the game late on and Lennon's pace late on nearly won it when he broke free but hit the crossbar as the game ended in a fair result, a draw.

Everton 1-1 Tottenham
Llorente 32; Park 73

Liverpool v Newcastle
Liverpool had an extra man in the middle of the park and had the stronger team which allowed them to win this game. Like many others, Newcastle have improved well but it wasn't enough to stop some classy attacking play from Liverpool. Diaby and Cabaye were simply over-run in midfield. Javi Martinez opened the scoring early on with a great long range drive. But Hernandez equalized soon after with a great run and low shot. But Liverpool slowly but surely made their superiority pay when N'Zogbia crossed the ball into Suarez who smashed home a late winner.

Liverpool 2-1 Newcastle
Martinez 20, Suarez 77; Hernandez 30

Man City v Man United
It was the blue half of Manchester which came out on top in this game and won thanks to a Carlos Tevez brace. Man United didn't turn up for the game and it showed. Tevez got past the defence with ease for the first goal, playing a neat one-two with Fabregas. The second came from a header when Van Der Weil bombarded down the wing. It could have been more for City in all truth, but they will be happy to have beaten a poor Man United side who should have put in a performance. Man City didn't really try after that, they didn't need to.

Tevez 8, Tevez 22
