Cristiano plays for Real Madrid with the likes of Lassana Diarra and past it Kaka. Messi plays with Cesc and Xavi.
He's stronger, faster, more dominant in the air and a better finisher. The only thing Messi can do is dribble well with the ball and chip the keeper.
Most of it was clearly tongue-in-cheek but in the 09/10 season, I remember a hell of a lott of United fans who claimed Rooney was better than Messi (and Ronaldo) when he went on that long run of consecutive headers and tap-in goals. Now that was hilarious.

My biggest criticism of Messi is that he never mixes it up. Ronaldo will take a shot from an impossible angle one time and then another time he'll score a header from a poor cross.
