Thinking mans player of the year

Without RVP, we would not be qualifying for the Champions League.

I don't want to proclaim we're a one-man team, because it's not like RVP made all of his own goals, but in terms of influence, I've not seen another player make such a big difference to one team's fortunes in years.

Not even Ronaldo in 2007/08 had as much of a personal influence, because he was able backed up by Rooney and Tevez.

Scholes has been of massive importance since he came back, so has RVP to Arsenal. That's why they are in the top 4.

Carrick is easily the thinking mans player of the year.

I'm confused by these awards now. I was under the impression they ran for Jan - Dec as opposed to August to May, which is why the nominations are done so early

Think I'll see if I can find out

This is for the football writers player of the year. In a way one of the better ones as they voted last week so its based on the season.

I have to say that Scholes has not been as consistent or impressive as RVP. He was ineffective against Everton (a crucial match) so lets see how he does aganist City before crediting Scholes with defining United's season.

Giggs and Scholes are still great against lesser opposition but POTS should also be judged against top class opposition.

Carrick deserves at aleast as much credit as Scholes this season but he has not been spectacular.

Put it this way, Scholes is nowhere near as good as he was at his peak - and he never won the award at his peak so it is difficult to argue that he deserves it now after playing only half a season in which Utd have won nothing yet.

The Premier League awards are on a season's basis, whereas awards like the World Player of the Year, it's based on the calendar year

Scholes will always be a contender as long as he's fit and still physically capable - and that's coming from a liverpool fan. But it's hard to argue with RVP winning it, he's be amazing for about 18 months and at times 'Messi/Ronaldo-esque' in terms of goalscoring!
