This is the same thing with Shaw people was like he’s not worth £50m

But when you think Rice is 22 he could give us 10 years. How much would we spend in the interim on £30m type midfielders that always end up being meh or pot shots like with strikers or attackers

Bit like instead of buying Shaw for £50m we’ve ended up spending about £90m on LB’s the last few years and haven’t had huge success

Not to say Shaw would of been success but he was 21 and a Chelsea fan and very good and injury free before united

Yet we hesitated because of the price and what have we done since? Filipe Luis, Baby Rahman, Alonso, Chilwell

Still would have had to do that due to his injuries anyway. They’ve still had to play Daley blind,rojo, bought Alex telles and others I’ve forgotten. Alonso has had more good seasons for us since luke shaw has been at Utd and chillwell has equal the amount of good seasons and only been here a year

Oh they also played Williams at left back and Alex buttner. Luke shaw has played 130 games in 9 seasons.
An average of 14 games.

As I said, who’s to say he wouldn’t of stayed injury free if we had signed him with our quality injury record

The point I was judging it on was we passed up the opportunity to sign the best young LB in the world at the time because we didn’t want to pay £50m even though he could of given us 10-15 years service (as I pointed o at the time) and I said we’ll end up spending double that over the next few years anyway and we’ve then spent around 100m since in the last 4-5 years

Point i’m making is we end up spending it anyway whether it’s over 2/3 years or just in one go. And we might as well spend it in one go to get a better chance of having a successful player

I’d rather spend £60m on a 22 year old rice than £30m on about 3 random pot shot europeans from abroad over the next 2-3 years

Lumping him in with failed signings didn’t give that impression but glad you cleared it up, Chilly is quality

Luke shaw was never the best young lb in the world. All this sounds revisionist on the back of shaw having one great season.

And why do you keep quoting 50 million when it was 30?

Declan rice, West Ham want 100m, it’s not even comparable.

Kante seems to get injured every 5 games now, Jorginho blows hot and cold and is still meh (way too many back passes) and Kovacic is garbage

Why not just get rice in now, it’s logical. A bit part midfielder like Niguez (same level as Barkley) would cost us 30m-40m

It is interesting that Tuchel has emphasised the importance of squad harmony recently. I guess he might be a bit worried about the impact of signing Kounde when he'll inevitably take a lot of minutes from our other CBs and/or Saul (even on loan) to be one of our highest earners and be our 4th choice CM.
