We don't know we won't be able to pay transfer fees. I'm not saying we will but until the new owners come in we won't know. It's possible we'll be able to pay big transfer fees.

And that worked wonders for Leicester Sutts

There is no room for manouvre at all in the transfer market until we have new owners. I can't believe that the only news on this front has been a week ago in the Daily Mirror. I respect confidentiality, but the uncertianty is driving me crazy! It could go either way, but it would be nice to recieve some reassurances. Why would GM or JL sign there new deals unless they had reassurances over the intent and ambitions of the club? We're a rudderless ship at the moment.

On the Roof

I'm not say it will nessaserily be a great thing to able to pay big fees. Just that we might be able too. We really haven't got a clue what will happen at this point

No chance of Butterfield signing for a Championship club...especially a bottom half Championship club.

Thats why he won't sign a new contract at Barnsley then.

I agree with Sutton, we can't speculate how much money we will have to spend in the summer yet, as we don' even know yet which manager will even be spending that money.

With the new owners or even if we have new owners, we could have £1 or £100 million to spend, we just don't know!

I just hope the ownership is sorted out soon, and the papers were right that the deal would happen by the end of this month, but they are keeping the situation remarkably quiet!

Yes we do, its going to be Cotterill. Any new owner worth his salt will continue to have Frank Clark as the chairman, and will listen to his advice regarding the Manager, and he wants Cotterill.

How do we know though if Frank Clarke will still be chairman???

It is all up in the air atm, so we don't know what is going to happen.

Will just have to wait and see I guess.

____________

How do you know that?

He may not have even have picked Cotterill we were linked with him before Clark was even at Forest. If he did bring him in he brought him in to a club in one situation, if that situation changes when the new owners come in how do you know he'll still be seen as the right man?

Also Cotterill was seen as the right man before he took us on one of the worst runs in the history of the club. I know a lot of fans have forgotten about that, I doubt Clark as. If it wasn't for Pompey getting deducted points we'd be going in to the last game with a huge chance of relegation. Another thing that people seem to have missed.

If the new owners come in with say a £10m pot to get us up. Would you want Cotterill to spend it? Surely we'd be better getting a man with experience of getting teams up, say Mick McCarthy. Cotterill will getting a nose bleed if we get in the top half.

If we stay skint when the new owners come in I can see why it might be best to keep Cotterill on. If they want to invest we can do better. If you can improve I can't see why you wouldn't.

Agree we cant do anything until we have new owners we have no money to play with at all.
I hope people dont give FC a hard time or Cotteril I beleive he deserves a chance.

My only concern is it sounds like we are quite a long way from takeover and this could turn into a shambles with the club having no fighting chance before the season kicks off.

I can actually see your point there sutton.

Is McCarthy better than Cotterill....answer - Yes

I just do not see us getting rid of Cotterill though. I think most posters on here are assuming that we will keep FC at the helm and SC will no doubt remain. It would be an unusual step if FC was relieved of his duties within the first year of a new regime.
I maybe wrong though.

TBH even if (if) we get mega-rich new owners I would like to see us look at hungry young players. Southampton got Lambert from (I think) Bristol Rovers, I think Le Fondre came from Rotherham or somewhere like that. There is real quality in the lower leagues again take Grolt, we got him from Rochdale, he went down to Shrewsbury from us and is now banging them in in the Prem.
Then take Leicester who paid huge sums of money for players who only seem to want to play in the big games hence why they do the double over Southampton but have the double done over them by Bristol City and will finish the season in mid-table.

And that is why we need a proven manager installed that is used to going up... McCarthy would be top of my list whilst available. (Not BD though)

I would be gutted if we hired Mick McCarthy.

Cotterill spent well in January and we know who his initial targets would be: Guedioura, Elokobi, Cunningham etc. Would anyone really have a problem with this?

posted on 24/4/12

I'd give him a chance Dave. Just saying that we would need a Championship manager to get us out of the Championship.

I'll never understand some people. Your happy for Cotterill to stay in the with a record at this level of something like 18th 19th 20th and 11th place finishes, but you'd be gutted if we hired a man that managed two clubs at this level and took them both up. To me that's just insane. I can't see any reason for not hiring MM over SC if we have the money to do so.

Guedioura is a very good player. It'd be great to see him stay. Wouldnt be too fussed about the others though. Guedioura and Cunningham are the only loan players that would get in our best 11.

The teams McCarthy has managed have just come down from the Premiership and have premiership players and parachute payments. It took him 2 years to get up with Sunderland and three years with Wolves.

I dont think Cotterills ever finished in the top half. Certainly never done well at a world cup. Who's the better manager? If asked every football fan in the country who's the better manager, SC or MM? How many would say SC? Very few if any.

On one hand people are saying they wouldn't want to buy instant success and your saying you wouldn't want McCarty because it took him a couple of seasons to build a side that could win promotion.

posted on 24/4/12

Cotterill went 7 games without a win with the Forest side Mclaren built, whereas McCarthy took Sunderland on a 19 game winless streak with a Sunderland side he'd spent over two years building.

McCarty was in the hardest league in the world with one of the smallest budgets. Cotterill had a budget much bigger than a lot in the league, certainly much bigger than those around him at the bottom end of the league. Different leagues, you can't really make comparisons.
