I haven't written him off, he has just been very unlucky.

You're right. Cleverley's one-touch game in and around the area is very, very good. The link up between him and Welbeck at times early on in the season was a joy to watch.

I am however, still slightly sceptical of his ability to play in a two man midfield. Not that I think he definitely cant - but we did look very exposed in the games he and Ando started together early on in the season.

Saying that, a lot of it was probably to do with him playing next to Anderson. I'm dissapointed that we didnt get to see more of a Carrick-Cleverley partnership this season. I think they would have worked well together.

bloodred - I agree

The point about Cleverley-Anderson's lack of defensive cover is probably because neither of them are defensive midfielders. I think they both play the same role (albeit in different ways), next to a defensive partner. So it is understandable that when played together, their performances are too attacking (though brilliant to watch).

Tom Cleverley has had bad injury problems since the age of 14 apparently. I wasn't aware of that until recently.

He went on loan to Watford, did well but got injured. He then went to Wigan and impressed and got injured. he then broke through at United and got injured.

People are right to have concerns. He seems to have very bad luck with injuries which many other people label as being injury prone.

I haven't written him off but at the same time haven't pinned all my hopes on him either.

It’s amazing how many people seem to be writing him off because of his injuries at a young age.

Who is are these "many people"?
I would say they've written i'm off more a case of voicing their concerns!

All I can say is that Giggs had a few injuries early on and look at his career.

Fair enough. But I've read plenty of comments over the past couple of months that make me think that the person doesn't believe he'll ever make it. They might not have intended it to come accross like that, but that's the impression I'm getting.

I would be more worried if he never played a game ever 3 months as owen hargreaves injury was crazy. I have never seen such a long term injury then him. I thought saf got it wrong getting rid of him when he scored that goal but even city medical team must think he can't play without needing a year out.

Don't think any normal fan is writing him off. I think the problem lies in that many felt he was our saviour when played a few games at the start of the season when clearly he isn't.

I think he's a good prospect who plays the right way, he has a long way to go before he can become a regular starter for us but clearly these injuries are not helping. I think he could become a very useful squad player which would be very useful for us.

Whilst I respect everyone's views on Cleverley's injury record and whether or not he will be a first team regular or a squad player in the future, I get the impression only bloodred is in tune with the theme of the article. It isn't about Cleverley in particular, more about the fact we struggle to break down deep defences when our CM is Scholes and Carrick. Most replies have been about the first sentence of the OP.

I'll change the name of the article

He is injury prone, I have doubts as to weather he will ever manage to play a full seaosn injury free.

When you tear ankle ligaments, you rarely get back to 100%, either mentally or physically, they will always keep tearing.

This is a silly argument, Giggs had hamstring problems throughout his 20's if I remember correctly, but he was a racing cert to be a top player from the age of 15, he was amazing when he was young.

You only have to look at the likes of Dyer, Ashton and co who all had good potential but never made it due to injuries, even RVP until his last 18 months.

I suppose like Anderson it's down to Cleverley to prove he can stay fit.

We can talk about it on here for ages but it won't change anything.

Both Cleverley and Anderson simply have to prove they can stay clear of injuries, because at the moment they are hurting us by never being available when we need them. (i.e the blackburn home defeat)

A midfield that could work:

Carrick
Cleverley Anderson

That would give us the exciting play that we had at the beginning of the season, with Defensive cover with Carrick.

I think that midfield would be exciting and solid. But we'd have to drop Welbeck or a winger and play Rooney out of position. Maybe in some games when Rooney is injured or in need of a rest?

That's exactly what I think, When Young/Rooney are injured/need a rest, Welbeck can come in.

posted on 9/5/12

I think we're talking on cross purposes - I meant when Rooney is in need of a rest, Anderson could come in to make the three in CM. I would rather have Welbeck on the pitch usually.

posted on 9/5/12

One of the things I am most impressed with about Cleverley is his interplay with the likes of Welbeck. This was particularly evident at the start of the season, but as you say he's got a long way to go yet to reach his potential.

posted on 9/5/12

Definitely. His link up play with Welbeck also arises from the fact they grew up playing football together. They know eachother's games inside out before they even reach the first team.
