Will read later, but I know that IMO we a complete overhaul IMO, to make us more flexible.

All that article basically shows is that the wingers and Rooney at times drop deep to change the shape of the team.

15/20 PL teams do that.

It is a very good article, at the beginning of the season, I thought our play was amazing. I loved watching that. But i don't know how we can get back to that play with the same defensive solidity.

With the same defensive solidity??

Hell United were lucky to only concede two against Arsenal and they could've conceded 6 against Chelsea.

Wise up.

That's why he said get back to that style of play. We were far more open at the back at the start of the season but have been more conservative since by and large and kept a lot more clean sheets. And any time we've played more open we've conceded goals. Not that hard to understand surely.

I think Kissing Cameras means playing with the expansive, one touch football that we terrorized teams with during the opening weeks of the season but have the defensive solidarity of the run of games just after the City defeat (conceding one goal in six games).

Lol I apologize. Hangovers make me stupid and grumpy. But to be honest, United aren't good enough at the minute to mix the two to a good extent. I know some ppl defend 4-4-2 to the hilt and others claim we don't really play 4-4-2 but I think we do. At least we rely far too much on our wingers. Yes its effective a lot of the time. But its boring, predictable and gets overrun by good teams.

Even if Fergie gets rid of Berbs and Owen I don't want him t bring in another striker. Buy a classy attacking midfielder, if we

Sorry, if we get a classy attacking midfielder in I'll be happy and him, Young, Nani, Rooney and Welbeck can interchange across the front three like the 2008 team.

Again, my apologies.

The main reason I believe we have to go 4-4-2 is that Rooney doesn't have the discipline to stay forward. And I am in a minority of about one in thinking he's at his best in and around the box and not when dropping deep and attempting a playmaking role which he struggles to fulfil.

So go back to the 2008 tactics and he won't have to play a playmaking role. Only reason United play 4-4-2 now is because of the brilliance of Rooney and its too much to ask of him and its starting to tell.

One tactic that United used very well at the beginning of the season was when we played with Ando in CM.

When DG had hold of the ball our two centre backs would peel off to the full back positions and the fullbacks would advance up to the half way line.

This would cause their centre forwards to naturally track the run of our center backs to wider areas and with our full backs defending high up the pitch it forced the midfield battle into their own half.

This opened up the middle of the pitch for DG to roll the ball to Ando who could advance unopposed quickly through CM and get the ball out wide higher up the pitch.

We used this tactic especially in the CS, Bolton away and Arsenal at home and scored many goals.

We soon got sussed eventually (by Norwich at home notably) but it was a masterstroke of a tactic.

Maybe a Phelan moment!

Tbh its too much to ask of rooney to play the playmaker' s role. It will be better if we play a good attacking mid/ second striker behind him so he doesn't get isolated. When was the last time we played rooney up top with a very good playmaking striker/attacking mid?

Great post RBW, we rarely see a good tactical explanation on ja606, nice to see it.

I'm not a fan of Rooney up top on his own, but it might work with a decent playmaker just behind him. I'd just like Rooney to try and make things happen on the field more often, like he did at times last week and away to Chelsea (that was his best game for ages). He still has the ability to thread passes through and beat a man IMO, but like our CM he seems to be relying on the wingers at times to create chances.
