The rules were changed to ensure that the champions always have the chance to defend the trophy, and that is the way it should be.
Why? Who ever wins the world cup has still got to qualify next time around.
He's also the worst at shooting out of the three, well, no out of everyone - Most shots without a goal this season

Downing = most shots on target without a goal...in the whole of Europe!

it's statistically impossible to do worse and selling now would be pointless from a financial standpoint.
It would be like Spurs having sold Bale because you didn't win a single match with him in the side for over half a season (or something like that).
He's never going to be brilliant but if he gets back to his somewhat normal form he's very good cover and scores and assists a reasonable amount.
I think we need a foreign winger / wide forward in the 20 mil range and we should keep Downing.
He did create an amazing number of chances this season. Everyone just forgot to put them away or hit the bar.
I'm not happy but feel a bit more patience is needed.
Lennon's only scored 4 goals, his higher ever season tally is 5. I just don't rate him... he's fast, decent dribbling and sometimes his crosses are decent but that's it.
Downing isn't a bad player lol... like I said sounds stupid but it was just a shocking season plus very unlucky with some shots/assists. His technique is much better than Lennon.

I agree with 8bit. I seriously believe Downing's price tag put pressure on him. If he was bought for what he was worth, 8-12 million, he would've done better.
redconn regarding the thing with Bale, a bit different circumstances don't you think? He was really young and never properly tested, and he was only a left back back then so couldn't influence a game as much as a winger.
If I was Liverpool I'd probably keep him as back up and buy a proper winger and make sure they're taking his place in the first team next season. Players like Downing are never going to propel you to where you want to be.
8bit I obviously disagree. Lennon is exciting when he gets on the ball because he can go past players and is fast. Downing might just pip him on delivery but it's only very slight between the 2, and everything else Lennon beats him on. Lennon is a few years younger too don't forget.

Defenders cack themselves when someone faster than Ben Johnson on tyrannosaurus growth hormone (TGH) is racing down the flank. They know he's rubbish but there's always that 'what if' doubt creeping through.
It stretches defences.
Guys, lets face it, if you're relying on either Walcott, Lennon or Downing to win you things, you're off your rocker

Pace is one of the best assets a player can have though, whether they make the most of it or not. I am one of the first to criticise Walcott for being inept, but players like him and Lennon with their pace have helped their teams get into the top 4 more than once. And Downing has well, helped his team get their worst finish in the premier league.
i'm not saying Lennon's awful but he doesn't really do anything special, maybe once every 30 games. Walcott is worse on the ball but he's much faster, better movement and finishing. Downing i wouldn't have in the squad either tbh, Johnson and Sturridge are better options.
I hate Sturridge. Greediest in the game, thinks he's God's gift. Serves him right seeing Bertrand start ahead of him last night.
He does have talent though.
