Personally I think we need two "central" midfield players.
One to perform the more defensive duties and start off attacks from deep (someone like a Martinez or Strootman), and a more attack-minded central player like Kagawa so as to relieve some of the pressure on Rooney/ offer us a threat from the middle (I think our game becomes a bit obvious when we consistently pass the ball out wide to the wingers).

I got excited when I first started reading this comment as I agree 100% but then you mentioned Kagawa as the other 'central midfielder'. He's a 10/wide cover, not a central midfielder. He wouldnt work as centrally in a 4-4-2 unless he was behind the main striker. The same applies in a 4-5-1. In a 4-3-3 he would be one of the wide players in the front 3.
I def agree we need two players, but both should be pure central midfielders imo, like a Keane and Scholes combo.
