That's just 4-4-2 as we played last season but Rooney more forward and Kagawa in Rooneys place.

I hope to god that we don't start the season with that central midfield as well.

Kagawa does bring another dimension to our game he's great link up player and good scorer

Nani Kagawa Young
Rooney

Valencia cannot play in a flexible formation IMO.

That forward line is fine IF we get a solid CM

Giggs and Scholes should not be starting games

Rather see Cleverley in there. Scholes can't play every game, plus he tires after about 70 mins.

I rate Cleverley very highly.

Me too I just pray he stays clear of injury, sadly his record isn't good though. He gets injured all the time and has done for years.

VCD,

Is it though? Rooney had to occupy his, well, 'Rooney role' while also being relied on to get some goals under his belt. While I understand what you're saying, it is, in essence, the same but I think they key ingredient is the fact that Kag can concentrate on staying in that hole, he's not expected to score, to be on the penalty spot when crosses come in, he can focus on his specific task of passing/dribbling whereas Rooney tries to do a bit of everything.

Yes good point Rooney_Hernandez

I think your spot on there pal

@ Ruiney
I don't really see a lot to Cleverley's game, he has a good short pass and a quick football brain but apart from that I do not seem him being particularly quick or strong and nor does he seem to be able to dribble or tackle particularly well. Thoughts?

Cleverley started last season in CM and did fantastic didn't look out of place in our side at all.

But he only played 8 games all season, even when. He came back he coudnt get into the side.

I do worry about him being another Hargreaves, and by that I mean unfortunate with injuries throughout his career.

I think we need at least one CM and a LB. I know we have Carrick, Scholes, Anderson and Cleverly there at the moment. Fletcher could return with Giggs being able to play there, too at a push.

But I think with Giggs and Scholes past their best, Fletcher with his illness and Anderson and Cleverly being injury prone, we will need someone in the middle. Someone more defensive minded that can pass as well as having a bit of a bite.

Evra is past his best I believe. I think he needs to be replaced and Fabio or Fryers aren't ready yet (and Fabio has his injuries to deal with).

Jones in the mid?

posted on 5/6/12

I'm not saying it will definitely be Scholes and Carrick there, it may well be Ando, Clevs even Fletcher when he's back, I just felt that was most suited to the team in its present form.

Coincidentally, does anyone else think that this may open the door for Ando's resurgence? He always seemed to be best when he didn't have the pressure of defensive responsibilities, him and Kag may well have to fight tooth and nail with each other to command that spot.

I rate Clevs very highly, but nowhere near as highly as I rate Scholes. His short game is probably on par, however, he can't yet spread the ball like Scholes does around 10-15 times a game. An aspect we clearly missed at the start of the season.

remember guys welbeck will be a part of the first team too.

may its welbeck upfront in the 4231, rooney behind him and kagawa on the left??

No, Jones needs isn't the answer.

For sure, Welbeck will play a lot next season.

Hope he gets nod ahead of that pathetic lump, Carroll in euros.

If he scores a couple if could do him the world of good and come back a better player.

Meant to say Jones isn't the answer to our midfield problems.

Welbeck could also lead the line and Little Pea too, but it means this time round we have a bit more tactical alternatives than we had last year.

Cleverley is similar to Wilshere in the way he can keep possession with short passes and close control, he could do with getting more tackles in though. He also links up with the front men really well.

I think we have lots of attacking options I just worry about how solid our CM is, if we think Giggs and Scholes can play games from start then I'm worried.

They are nearly 40 years old.

I thought Giggs was very poor last season, however, I thought Scholes was fantastic, Fergie now has a second chance to mold proper replacements for them into the team, while still relying on them from time to time.

Pre-season will be very interesting.

Like I said though, is Kagawa, when deployed as a wide man, better than Nani or Young?

Giggs is my favourite player along with Cantona, but he was shocking last season.

What irritated me most was how many times he tried fancy flicks that never worked, also his Hollywood passing was truly dreadful

Like I said he's a legend and could still have an impact but STRICTLY from bench only. And same with Scholes but I wouldn't mind him starting a few games.

It's time we attempted to move on from these legends not linger on days gone by.

Think everyone will get their chance to play, but I think your post illustrates why we dont need another striker,

I still don't think it's going to be a 4231.
More likely to be a 442 diamond.
Besides, the formation doesn't really matter as our players tend to float around the field depending on the situation

posted on 5/6/12

I think with the 3 we have and Kagawa, Young and Nani at a push being able to play behind a striker, we should do alright in the attacking front. We need to sort out CM and LB first.
