We spoke to 16 BBC pundits, commentators and journalists to find out who they are tipping as winners, runners-up and semi-finalists - with the caveat that not all predictions may work out precisely because of the nature of the draw.

So I don't see what's so wrong with what he said.

Alan Hansen, what a legend

He could only be a former Liverpool player.

It only shows hia predictions for the top 3

I take it the 4th team has been removed when he realised his error?

Alan Shearer...."I have picked England to reach the semi-finals because I am English, I am patriotic and I want them to do well.

Football punditry has to be based on more than just this doesn't it. We pay him for this kind of insight?

gotta laugh at the state of football punditry. Neville was meant to be the saviour

Hansen is a clown but Shearer is even worse

Biglaa - nature of the draw means that teams may meet sooner depending on where they finish in their group. Doesn't mean 3 teams from 1 group could magically qualify for the quarter finals!
That's funny that they've removed it! He's such a fool he couldn't even think of a team to replace Portugal!

Well I still think he's a safe bet for 3 of his 4 to be there at the end. It sounds like the question would have been simply put to them more like "Who are your top 4 teams for the EC, in order?"

posted on 6/6/12

Nope, it's clear they wanted the semi finalists. Why would they have removed Portugal from his predictions otherwise?

Seems quite clear to me....

Just saying.

They removed his fourth prediction - they know he made a mistake!! Like I said, the caveat was there to allow for the fact that the final group standings could mean people's first and second choices meeting in an earlier round. It doesn't allow for three teams qualifying from one group!

I have to agree Shearer is worse. Not only does he offer nothing tactically, he is probably the most boring ex player they could have picked.

Sometimes it feels like a players career is more important than their talent for the new job which is pretty tragic.

Yeah Shearer shouldn't be anywhere near this tournament as a pundit. His comments were cringeworthy really.

Lineker defending him on Twitter now. Even if he was talking about his top 4 prospects you have to allow for the fact that only two teams can qualify, otherwise it's just lazy punditry! If only two teams can qualify, you cannot logically have three from the same group as top prospects. You may as well back all 16 teams on the basis that all of them have a chance of making the knock out rounds!
