could we play him out wide?

I doubt that would get the best out of him.

Would love to see him playing alongside Mikel/Essien/Romeu as the creative playmaker.

Not quite got the raw pace for a winger but certainly can beat a man and thread a ball further forward.

Also in more recent times at Fulham seems to have a great workrate and decent tackle on him.

Is he a world class midfielder though that will help us win titles and trophies? We're not Arsenal or Tottenham, we need world class players, Dembele is a good player for a 3rd/4th placed team, he looks good for fulham as well because fulham isn't exactly a star studded squad, charlie adam looked a world beater for blackpool because it was blackpool.

Black Iniesta?

posted on 21/6/12

You could be right about his lack of world class credentials but unfortunately in that position, the world class players are Xavi, Iniesta, Alonso, Schweinsteiger etc and they just aren't gonna leave current clubs and even if they did they would cost a serious amount of money.

Dembele in my opinion has more about him than Barry at Man City, Carrick at Utd and Arteta at Arsenal. Probably only Modric is better in the Prem in that type of deep lying playmaker role.

Certainly worth a punt if the £10m suggested is about right. Plus he should have decent connections with the other belgians.

If we sell Meireles I'd love to see us sign Dembele, but I doubt Raul will leave

posted on 21/6/12

In my opinion Meireles just highlights AVB's problems at Chelsea. Bought as a goal scoring midfielder to replace Frank.

Simply not even in the same league, even with frank at 33 last season.

Dembele 25 in a few weeks too. Ideal age

I don't rate him.

25 didn't realise he was 25 !!!! definitely a no from me now

posted on 21/6/12

I rate him, and £10million is a bargain, but I dont think he fits in. Plus with people like KDB, McEachran coming through, It's just spending more money and pushing our youth players further down in the pecking order.

Why? 25 isn't old

Imagine if we had the same attitude when we signed Drogba (who was actually 26 when he came to Chelsea)

posted on 21/6/12

He had one of the best tackle % last season, he is class at running with the ball and winning it back, he is good enough at passing, but he isn't a Modric type passer.

You should sign Lee Cattermole or Joey Barton, they are more your level of player.

And these type of signings will prepare you well for FFP, when the days of lavish over spending by your dodgy owner will be long gone.

He's a very good player, a natural talent. I'd love him at Arsenal.

I'd be very disappointed if we spent double the amount on a battering ram like Fellaini.

I'd like to think from other recent signings, Luiz, Mata, Marin, Hazard etc that we are looking to control games in the near future.

Someone like Fellaini wont add to that list of natural talent.

Watching the likes of Pirlo and Xavi dictate tempo at this Euro 2012 is just what we should be aiming for.

Not the running around, kicking anything that moves and giving the ball away like Gerrard and Parker.

We must look towards dictating tempo against the bigger teams and having creativity all over the pitch against the poorer teams.

People worried about our physical attributes when defending and attacking set pieces :

Ivanovic
Cahill
Terry
Mikel
Torres

When I read threads like this it makes me wonder if fans just want us to spend money for the sake of it.

posted on 21/6/12

Or thinking of viable alternatives to more expensive options.

So really you could argue threads like these actually looks at not spending money for the sake of it

Just a thought

Ivanovic- May be going or won't be playing often with the possible new right back coming in.
Cahill- Fair enough.
Terry- Fair enough.
Mikel- Not dominant in the air.
Torres- Loses his man quite often when defending corners.

When you consider that our ability to defend set plays and score set plays where a big part of our champions league success, you can see why people want a Fellaini type player. That type of player will also provide the right balance in the team too as we have far more creativity playing in front next season.

posted on 21/6/12

@Lilly5710 - yes, he may be a viable alternative but he isn't going to improve the team. The players we have are already better than him and as someone has already pointed out, he'll be blocking the way of players like DeBruyne and Josh progressing.

I would compare signing him to Meireles.

posted on 21/6/12

That's your opinion and fair enough.

I actually think he'd be our best option in that position.

When compared to Frank (who would ofcourse be used still but much less), Meireles and Malouda.

It seems he has come out and said he will be staying at Fulham.
I wouldn't be surprised to see us or United make a bid should Modric go to the other or Madrid.

I'd love Dembele - I think he's as talented as any central midfield player in the premiership right now. Plus he's big and strong. For 10 million he's a steal.

When England played Belgium recently, Witsel played in the defensive midfield position behind Fellaini and Dembele - and they totally dominated possession. To some extent he plays in the hole where Mata has played recently, albeit probably slightly deeper. But I'm sure we could accommodate them both. Big yes from me.

Someone like Fellaini wont add to that list of natural talent.

And Dembele would be great
