Beckham is great ambassador and still has that class, he'll be valuable in the dressing room as well. Giggs is going as well out of sentiment.

So you say it shouldn't be in the Olympics and then say it's an important competition. And if it's about youth development then why allow overaged players in the first place. There's prestige just because it's the Olympics but in football terms it's not significant. Look at some of the teams competiting, the players will probably get more from a pre season friendly against Barnet.
______________
I'm not sure you're the brightest.
I said 'FIFA obviously feel it is important...' and I also said 'you could argue it is an important youth football tournament'. I then said 'Messi obviously thought it was important'.
At no stage did I express how I rated it's importance, since I was being objective. I did clearly say that if it was up to me then I wouldn't have it in the Olympics (I'd rather see a separate youth football tournament structured similarly re U23s), but that's more because I feel football shouldn't detract from the other Olympic sports where this is the biggest stage rather than because I think it doesn't offer anything to the youth taking part. However as it is in the Olympics, and we have decide to enter a team, and that team is representing the country, then I feel it should be approached seriously.
IMO it is disrespectful to then treat it like a joke exhibition event, and disrespectful to other better experienced players in top competitive leagues to not choose them when they'd like to go and instead pick Beckham as a thank you gift like you say we should because he 'deserves it' rather than it being a sensible football decision for whatever reason. I'd rather we didnt have a team if that's the attitude. At least if you felt Beckham was right as the perfect guy to boost and develop the other players then that's some view, but just as a thank you present is ridiculous.
Has this finally sunk in?
I'd also be interested to know how many and which International worldwide youth football tournamentS you believe are bigger international youth tournament than the Olympics since you have said you feel it's such an insignificance?
If you don't feel it's important then why would you be arguing with me for saying it's not?
Messi wanted to play because it's the Olympics and some people want to be associated with that. It's a different experience to football, living in the village being surrounded by other athletes and not just footballers etc. There's also plenty of other top players who probably see it as a waste of time.
The only prestige is that fact that it's the Olympics, in the context of football it's a minor tournament of little significance. U21's and other age groups are more important because there's a qualifying process where the best teams make it and the groups aren't made up of random cannon fodder teams.
If it's all about youth development why have a 3 overage player rule? FIFA requires clubs to release players for pointless international friendlies at silly times, not many people think they're important either. It's the biggest sport in the world but is nowhere near the main attraction at the Olympics, which shows what a big deal it is.
Your reasoning is basically 'it's a tournament and therefore it's important and should go all out to win it.' The players that go will be trying their best but that doesn't make the Olympics tournament a significance in the world of football because quite simply it's not. It's a sideshow, and given that fact I would play Beckham as a thank you and a send off because he deserves it.
I agree with 8bit. It's not an especially important tournament, let Beckham go. It'll be good seeing him partner Jason Lowe in midfield.
I think it's very important to the players.

OMG, you're either dumb or a wum, but either way ive had enough of you. I never once said 'I dont feel it's important', in fact quite the opposite since the football is officially in the Olympics we should treat it importantly with our young players rather than as a joke.
Ah I now see from your posting history you are indeed a wum/spammer 8bit with things like mindless one word articles etc. I should have checked this first.
How is taking a legend of the game and an ambassador of our nation to the games a joke?
"since the football is officially in the Olympics we should treat it importantly"
So I was right when I said your logic is basically 'it's a tournament therefore it's important.'
The Olympics isn't a big deal, hence why we're not treating it 100% seriously. Simple as.

I agree Redconn. I think loads of the U23s and many of the overage players are very keen on it indeed. We only need to look at past player v club clashes and also the players proposed for team GB that have gone against the ideal wishes of their FA.
I think you'd be rather a strange 19 year old for example if you werent excited about taking part in the Olympics, and just look at how keen even a player with the career Beckham had is to play, whether he should be picked or not.
