@JPB-Spur - What you on about, we have quite a few expected golds!

I worked it out, for me to see GB at football.
If we finish second which would proably happen, we'd face Mexico (proably) if we beat them, I'll see them at Wembley , proably against Spain (Or Brazil if they finish second in their group with the footballing heavyweights in Egypt, Belarus and New Zealand)

Tom "the torpedo in a tutu " Daly.
==============

I dont know anything about diving, but so far as i know he's got a good chance of gold.

He's hardly a world superstar though, and it's not one of the blue ribband events.

In athletics, we've usually had recognised world class athletes going into the game. Athletes i remember watching include roger black, linford Christie, seb coe, peter Elliot, steve cram, daley Thomson, steve backley, colin Jackson, john regis, chris akabussi, Dwayne ladejio, mark Richardson, iwan Thomas, Jonathon Edwards.

As I say, I suspect there are guys who will really make their mark at this meeting, but I dont see the established quality that we are used to having, particularly in the feature athletics events.

Who are the established stars then who would be akin to the names i have just mentioned ?

I'm principally talking about athletics which i regard as the feature of the olypmpics, but would be interest to hear about other sports as well if you have people in mind.

JPB, a few of the guys/gals you are listing are span over almost 20 years of Olympics. Comparing to one year, 2012 is a bit unfair. This year's track events Farah is as good as they come. Radcliffe on past history isn't exactly an unknown.

I believe the GB female Javelin record was broken this week?

The olympics is just an excuse for the government to make the taxpayer foot the bill for the redevelopment of a run down area of london, what's good about that.

@JPB - But Athletics is not as popular now as it was then! Not sure if it's because Sky bought the rights and no one watches it normal TV now.

But Christine Ohuruogu, Mo Farah, Dai Greene, Jessica Ennis,Philips Idowu (but not sure as he seems injured) have a good chance of gold.

I could have said the following as well though, as well as others :

alan wells, tessa sanderson, fatima whitbread, liz mccolghon, zola budd, paula radcliffe (in her prime), kelly holmes, sally gunnell.

Rscliffe isnt an unknown, but isnt now regarded as one of the top athletes in the world so far as i know.

The javelin record maybe, but is she world nr 1 ? who is she ? i dont even know her name. going into other games everyone knew sanderson and whitbread.

It's a fair point about the athletes ive mentioned spanning 20 years, although so far as i remember we have always had at least 3 or 4 superstars going into the games, particularly in the 80s and 90s anyway. Where are the christie's the coe's the thompsons, the jacksons ?

Im not saying that british athletes wont do well, but i would have thought that the british athletics federation ? would be dissapointed that we dont have more established stars going into the games.

Fair enough. Yes idowu would count i reckon, and maybe some of the others youve mentioned.

I think our other point is interesting as well. That maybe part of the reason why these names arent bigger in the UK than they are, but i think it is also true that they are just not as dominant as some of the other athletes ive mentioned are. A decline in the popularity of athletics in the UK may be an explaination of this too however

we'd probably do the opposite forza and consider it a bit rude for us to deny our hosts victories.

do we have to talk about Rio on every thread lads ?

Unfortunately the problem with the Olympics is that you get no medals if you come in 4th place whereas you do in the PL.
