I'm a tad disappointed in this news, for starters it looks like we are pursuing options to replace Zola and secondly he's 37, he may be great but stamina must be an issue at 37 to play the ratio of games we usually endure towards the end.
We all saw what happend to Sol Campbell at Notts County, he was a national legend but will be remembered for dropping down the leagues and becoming a joke.
Saw this headline and thought, wow, how have we managed that.
A quick click on the link to find out he is 37 ruined my optimism.
33/34 maybe, but 37, just wow.
Where has it said that we are definitely signing Adebola?
As far as I know he along with fellow strikers Brett Williams and Matt Patterson will all be trialling against Derby on Saturday. With Kee stilll coming back from his injury, together with Richards and Zola picking up strains/knocks we only have Yussuf fit at moment. Last season we had four strikers plus Adi on the books. We have since released Greg Pearson, hence he is looking to get another one in
Adebola knows Gary Rowett from when they were team mates at Birmingham City. Up to date Gary has not signed "mates". However by him training and trialling it gives Gary a chance to assess whether his "legs have gone". I'm sure the club won't go down the same route as they did with Darren Moore, giving a 2 year deal only to find out it should have been a 1 year only deal. If Adebola did sign then he would be one of 4 strikers, and hence wouldn't be required to play week in week out.
Rowett's signings so far have all been much younger, played at higher level and keen to get back to that level with something to prove.
Out of the three I personally would like to see us sign Matt Patterson. Looked useful against us for Stockport the other season, and he is also of the right age.
Let's wait and see what actually transpires. Still 3 weeks to go before the big kick off!
Great old pro but like CaptainUtd a tad disappointed. I understand Zola is off, but Dele is 37 years old, smacks of a little desperation to have at least one 'old pro' up front. Liked the look of Pattison on Tuesday night, think he can do a job for us and Williams scored, so again could be a possibility. Heard that Billy Kee is back in training and may get a few minutes on Saturday so lets not panic Mr Mannering!!
You lads need not worry. If signed he will be an impact subabd he will make an impact. Sherringham played till he was 40 at top level.
Hilton Brewer, Stockport away, was that the nil nil draw? Seem to remember Penn and Winnall missing sitters and the only reason we got a draw was a MOTM display by Adam Legz! Is Paterson (not Pattison!) the striker who smacked our bar in the last minute?
A great player in his day and on his day. It will be for Gary and Kevin to decide how far his best days are behind him and equally important how much he wants (money) and how injury prone he is.
A pay as you play deal might be good. His reading of the game, his strength on the ball and in the air, his finishing his and ability to hold the ball up and bring others in to the game might well be a fine asset at this level. It is the caveats in my first paragraph that are key.
Hi U15291! Yes Patterson was the player that broke clear and should have won them the game. Fortunately their awful pitch contrived to make the ball bobble as he went to shoot and the ball smacked against the crossbar. Only thing to get past Legzdins that day! Also that game saw Paul Boertien's last game in an Albion shirt
I remember the game well. It was a good nil nil!! Legz was amazing that day and thwarted Stockport a few times. Boertien = battler! Seem to remember Patterson giving us problems all day, will be good to see if the lad gets a decent run out on Saturday, as you said, he fits the Rowett mould of young, played at a higher level and hungry to get going again.
I thought that was a dreadful game. We never got going all game and I thought it was 3 points for the taking on the way there (despite our poor run at the time). We were lucky to get a point and lucky to score nil.
You are probably right Otep - a dreadful game! See that the Rowett is already bigging up Adebola in the local press, that he sees him as a replacement target man for Zola. Think I will be disappointed if this is the case, firstly we should do all we can to keep Zola and secondly at 37, apart from a bit of an impact sub, I don't see him playing 40 + games next season! This will be really disappointing news for both Williams and Paterson - what's the point in trialling young up and coming players if you are just going to revert to some old warhorse anyway! I like the idea of young, hungry players playing for the shirt, think that will get us a much better league position this season.
Sorry chaps i see it as a backward step to even think about employing Dele Adebola.Good player, not a great player in his hay day and i dont want him dumped on our football club like you know who was and sucking our finances dry for no return.Sounds a bit harsh but thats how i see it.
Now I've seen Adebola play I think he offers something to the team. He's massive! wins loads of headers and holds the ball up well. He needs a quick thinking striker playing alongside him, Billy would fit the bill, if he stays and if he's fit. Think he would batter in L2, that said it will all come down to £££££s in the end, wouldn't allow him to join for stupid money.
Agreed BurtonBoy. Thought he gave Derby's new £1million plus signing Keogh a torrid time. At one point Keogh went to challenge and just bounced off him. He looked a fit 37 year old. We'll just have to wait and see whether he's involved against the Foxes on Wednesday night
He is going to be involved against Leicester and although Walsall are also interested it would appear(reading between the lines) that the fact he played with Gary Rowett at Birmingham may sway it in our favour and a deal looks likely.
I was very wary at first but i gather he is a very fit 37 year old, the more i look at the situation i think he could be a valueable asset at our level, particularly with Zola's injury record. Hopefully the gaffer has learned from the non playing centre back fiasco under Pesch and this will prove a different scenario altogether.
Adebola is certainly not going to get bullied off the ball is he ? He will certainly add an impressive physical presence in either box.Fingers crossed this works out well for the club, player and supporters !
I was told last night that Walsall are 'very' keen on taking Dele but that his agent was talking to Burton today. As much as I think he is a good target man with a huge amount of strength on the ball I just don't see him playing 40+ games in a season. If Calvin and Kee are off, then I would take him and Paterson, but if they stay I don't want Rowett to be offering a huge weekly wage to him.
