but what is their field galv ?
they are taking part in 100m race.
they are not the fastest 100m runners.
the winner is statistically likely to be the 8 millionth fastest runner.
so what is this "field" you're talking about ? define it ? the best what ?

I dont think they do weare.
And i dont see the connection at all between your example and what im saying. the equivelant would be to say that i would like to have dinner with someone who kills disabled people. i have said nothing of the sort. nothing like it.
Paralympians !
Same as Olympians in THEIR field
Same as dogs at crufts, best baked pie on the bake off.
===============
exactly.
same as the fat people's olympics and the olympics for people with no sporting talent.
whilst the paralympics is much more important from a human point of view, it's just as insignifcant from a sporting point of view. it's not elite sport.

The best artists are considered the elite in their field.
The best journalists are considered the elite in their field.
The best stock-brokers are considered the elite in their field.
The best farmers are considered the elite in their field. *chortle *
The best musicians are considered the elite in their field.
The best horses are considered the elite in their field.
The best Olympians are considered the elite in their field.
===================
Exactly.
but your'e saying :
The best disabled artists are considered the elite in their field.
The best disabled journalists are considered the elite in their field.
The best disabled stock-brokers are considered the elite in their field.
The best disabled farmers are considered the elite in their field. *chortle *
The best disabled musicians are considered the elite in their field.
The best disabled horses are considered the elite in their field.
How can you not see this / admit this ?

That isn't what they are saying JPB. We are dealing with a subset of sport whose field only contains people with disabilities.
you are. it comes back to your earlier poetry comment where is said i select the best book, not the best book written by a disabled writer.
why would i want to read the best book out of books written by a disabled writer ?
i wouldnt any more than i want to watch the best athlete out of disabled athletes.
i want to read the best book and i want to watch the best athletes. the best athletes are at the olympic games. the paralympics has people who are (arguably) the best athletes out of the very small group of people who have specific disablities.
you are being totally obtuse galvin.
there is nothing that the paralymians are best in the world at. they are (debatably) the best at something out of a very small proportion of the population.
Bit different writing a book to swimming with one arm

JPB
you could argue then that the gold medalists at the olympics are the best out of the small proportion that entered or do sport ?
they are either all Not Elite or they are all Elite, cant have it both ways
That isn't what they are saying JPB. We are dealing with a subset of sport whose field only contains people with disabilities.
=================
can you give an example ?
take the 100m race for partially sighted people. what you are finding is the best 100m runner out of people who are partially sighted.
take the whelchair races. you are taking the best people at racing wheelchairs out of the people who have to use a wheelchair ? if the event was open to people who use a wheelchair out of choice, it would almost vcertaintly have a different winner and an entireyl different field ?
JPB
you could argue then that the gold medalists at the olympics are the best out of the small proportion that entered or do sport ?
they are either all Not Elite or they are all Elite, cant have it both ways
===================
it's not a case of having it both ways.
are you saying that there are as many people with 1 leg who have run in some sort of 400m race as there are people with 2 legs who have run in some sort of 400m race ?
that is simply not the case.
JPB , it is a subset. Say the best book written by an under 18. You don't get the elite in their FIELD bit. What you are doing is opening it up and expanding a subset.
So in the all encompassing field of rowing, someone with one arm will not be as elite.
So in the field of disabled-rowing, someone who is able bodied arm will not be as elite. In fact they would be unable to compete.
JPB is that why people watch the Paralympics though?
I dont think it is mate. They watch it for the entertainment of sport and also to enjoy watching people overcome their disabilities Thats why most people watch it I reckon

exactly. but it's the best of a subset, not the best of the best. in the case of the paralympics, its the best of a very very small subset.
when was the last time you selected a novel based on whether the author was under 18 ? or whether the author was black ? or whether the author's name began with a P ?
you dont go into waterstones and see the top 40 books written by people with one arm, or the top 40 books written by people with no middle name.
you just see the top 40 books.
that's the elite.
as the elite in athletics is not the best out of a small subset of people, it's the best out of everyone.
the people in the paralympics are - from a sporting point of view - unlikely to be the best at anything.

well that's my whole point really messiah. people should be told, look weve got this group of guys who have been incredibly unlucky and theyve reposnded in an incredibly brave and determined way. come and cheer them on. that would be an honest approach to it. but i dont believe that's the approach that's taken. it's marketed as a 2nd olympics. it's name is derived from the word olympics, and tticket sales, tv viewers etc are attracted on the premise that they will see an elite sporting contest. they wont. it's a deception.
