I mean, I’m not actually watching the game so I’ve no idea how he’s doing tonight but for my money he’s been pretty average. I don’t think he’s defensively amazing and he looks like a centre half when he goes past the half way line. No one will convince me he’s even remotely an upgrade on Aurier, who, for all his rashness, was great going forward. I’m not sure what Royal’s strength even is.

His defensive brain and positioning is good and he's comfortable if not that great on the ball. Which is a start on what can say about our other options.

Modern day full backs need to be good going forward. The reason his positioning is good is because he stays back. It’s when you go forward your positional nous is tested. It’s just my opinion but a full back’s roll has changed. In virtually every successful team it’s about what they offer going forward, not how good they are at the back.
