Another trip in vain to the north east. At Sunderland, Gomez was sent off - a decision later overturned - leading to a defeat.

Now Figueroa has been sent off and a penalty given to Newcastle. A severe punishment - if, indeed, it was a foul at all. Again Gomez did not finish the game - he was replaced by McArthur in a tactical substitution.

There were good individual performances, but Newcastle's extra man made all the difference.

Wigan are just two points from safety, and face QPR on Saturday. In addition to those who are injured, they will go into that game without Figueroa and Caldwell, both suspended. It's a crunch game and will require a supreme effort.

Think Wigan will be fine come the end of the season, Kone going to the African Cup could hurt them.........
Can see why the pen was given last night but the rule needs to change with regards to an automatic red card, ruined the game and was undeserved for a dubious penalty.

All the Wigan players seem confident on the ball and if they can get some injuries back and not lose any players in the Jan window I think they will be comfortable in the league

It's going to be tough against QPR on Saturday.

Wigan now go into the crucial match without Figueroa and Cardwell - both suspended as a result of last night's match - unless they can make a successful appeal against the red card.

That's on top of an injury list of;
Ramis and Alcoraz in defence
Maloney, Crusat and Watson in midfield. It's not clear whether McArthur and Miyaichi are fit to start matches.

Stam, Jones, Gomez and Lopez do seem to have risen to the challenge.
