After losing the longest Republican streak in the last election, last voting Democratic in 1948 prior to 1996, Arizona had made a return to the Republican column in 2000. Bush made history by winning Greenlee County. This thinly populated working class county, which has been dependent on copper mining as the basis for its economy, had voted Democratic in every election since Arizona achieved statehood from 1912 to 1996, and now is Republican leaning in the 21st century.

Aerogels have been in existence for more than 80 years. Invented in 1931 by Dr. Samuel Kistler at the College of the Pacific in California, silica aerogel is a lightweight solid derived from gel in which the liquid component of the gel has been replaced with gas. When the liquid is removed, what remains is “puffed-up sand," with up to 99% porosity. The result is an extremely low density solid with several remarkable properties, most notably its effectiveness as a thermal insulator. Aerogels also have value in emerging applications such as energy storage, filtration and carbon capture.

But don’t you hate it when your cheese doesn’t melt? It’s just not the same – no-one needs cold, sweaty cheese atop their patty, y’know? Firefly burger bar in Abu Dhabi has sorted this problem though with their frankly ridiculous cheese injection burger. A syringe is inserted through the brioche bun, which then injects molten cheese into the burger.

For this particular pair of cheese shoes, Lisa Dillon used West Country cheddar and bread. A block of cheddar was sculpted to make the heels, and a stale cheese sandwich was used as part of the platform sole. The front of the shoe was also moulded from cheddar and more cheese was melted to create the embellished design.
