Steven Davis is set to become Northern Ireland's most capped player in Thursday's Euro 2020 play-off semi-final against Bosnia-Herzegovina.
The 35-year-old Rangers midfielder is level on 119 appearances with legendary goalkeeper Pat Jennings.
"I didn't really give it too much thought leading up to equalling Pat's record," said captain Davis.
"But after receiving so many messages from then, it makes you sit up and realise it's a hell of an achievement."
He added: "It's hard to sum up in words what it actually means, it probably wouldn't do it justice - there's been a lot of sacrifices made to get to this point.
"I've always enjoyed meeting up with the squad and there has been a great bond with the players throughout my time. The fans have always been fantastic to me as well so it's something I'm incredibly proud of.
"However, come Thursday the caps side of things will not be in my mind - it's all about the game."
The winner of the match in Sarajevo (19:45 BST kick-off) will meet either the Republic of Ireland or Slovakia for a place in next summer's European Championship, which was postponed this year because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Barnsley defender Bambo Diaby has been banned from all forms of football activity for two years after he was found guilty of breaching the Football Association's anti-doping regulations.
Diaby, 22, showed traces of Higenamine in an 'in-competition' urine sample when tested in January 2020.
However, he could not establish how the substance entered his system.
This triggered the two-year penalty, while the Tykes have now terminated his contract following the suspension.
The ban started on the date of his provisional suspension on 17 January 2020 and expires at 23:59 GMT on 16 January 2022.

Pineapples, because of their fiber and water content, help to prevent constipation and promote regularity and a healthy digestive tract. Pineapples are also rich in bromelain, an enzyme that helps the body digest proteins.

But first he had to convince the studio to pay for the immensely ambitious project. “I said, ‘Look, we’ve got to do this whole opening where they’re exploring the Titanic and they find the diamond, so we’re going to have all these shots of the ship. Now we can either do them with elaborate models and motion control shots and CG and all that, which will cost X amount of money, or we can spend X plus 30 percent and actually go shoot it at the real wreck,” he later said.

England U21s were held to a surprise Euro 2021 qualifying draw in Andorra, who scored a 91st minute equaliser.
Aidy Boothroyd's side stay top of Group Three with six wins from seven games.
The hosts took a shock lead through Cucu Fernandez but the Young Lions turned the game around through skipper Tom Davies and Josh da Silva.
But Fernandez levelled and although substitute Eddie Nketiah thought he had won it with with seven minutes left, Christian Garcia claimed a point.
Nketiah netted his ninth goal in his last five qualifying games and his 13th overall for England Under-21s, matching the record held by Alan Shearer and Francis Jeffers.
England remain unbeaten, but it was a poor result against the minnows, who collected just their eighth point from their last 24 qualifying games, dating back to 2015.
"You" is the ninth single released by UK pop group S Club 7 on 11 February 2002 as the final single from their third studio album Sunshine (2001). The track is an up-tempo retro number reminiscent of the group's fourth single "You're My Number One", and served as the theme song to their third series Hollywood 7 in 2001. The video is set in the 1950s and is described in the Best CD booklet as a "candy floss-bright, tongue-in-cheek 50s pastiche". This track was the last single to feature former band member Paul Cattermole and sparked the last leg of the S Club 7 journey. The song reached No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart. It also charted on the 2002 Year End Singles chart at number 70.
In a 2019 interview, Cattermole stated that the song was not the group's choice as a single, as they felt it was a step backwards from the more mature and contemporary sound they had established with the rest of the album but were overruled by management.
