Kauto Star (19 March 2000 – 29 June 2015) was a French-bred National Hunt champion racehorse trained by Paul Nicholls in Somerset and owned by Clive Smith. He won the Cheltenham Gold Cup twice, in 2007 and 2009, becoming the first horse to regain the cup after losing it in 2008 by seven lengths behind Denman. He tried for three more years to win the race again, but the best placing he could achieve was in 2011, coming third behind Long Run. He also won the King George VI Chase a record five times. He was one of the most successful steeplechasers of modern era finishing his racing career with a National Hunt record of £3,775,883 in earnings, which consisted of £2,375,883 in race prize money, £1,000,000 bonus for the completion of the 2006/2007 Stayers Chase Triple Crown and also a £400,000 reward for heading the BHA Table of Merit in the same 2006/2007 season.

The 2006 Challenge Cup (also known as the Powergen Challenge Cup due to sponsorship from Powergen) was the Xth tournament played for rugby league's Challenge Cup. It features teams from across Europe including England, Scotland, Wales, France and Russia.

The competition started in January 2006 with the preliminary round where the Gloucestershire Warriors from the Rugby League Conference surprised an established Pennine League team in Illingworth. The final was scheduled to be played at the new Wembley Stadium but in March 2006 it became apparent that the stadium would not be ready for the final on 26 August so it was switched to Twickenham.

Barnsley continued their march towards the Championship play-off places by making it five wins in a row with victory over Millwall.

The Tykes took the lead inside two minutes when Alex Mowatt's free-kick was not dealt with and Cauley Woodrow smashed home his 10th goal of the season.

But the lead was short-lived as Mason Bennett levelled for Millwall after six minutes following a swift counter-attack.

Barnsley defender Michal Helik grabbed the winner after 59 minutes, lashing a finely-struck volley past Lions goalkeeper Bartosz Bialkowski.

Actor Johnny Briggs, who played Mike Baldwin in Coronation Street for 30 years, has died aged 85.

His family said he died peacefully after "a long illness, with family by his side" and asked for privacy to "remember the wonderful times we had".

Briggs was made a MBE in the New Year's Honours in 2006, the year his character was killed off from ITV soap.

Baldwin's affair with Deidre Barlow and his feud with her husband, Ken, were a long-running ratings hit for the show.

He also appeared on stage and in films alongside the likes of Norman Wisdom, Dirk Bogarde and Tommy Steele.

Coronation Street colleagues have paid tribute to Briggs calling him a "wonderful actor" and describing Mike Baldwin as "one of the most iconic characters the Street has ever known".

The demise of Baldwin drew 12 million viewers and followed the character's battle with Alzheimer's - leading the actor to back a fundraising appeal to help those affected by the disease.

Briggs won the British Soap Award for lifetime achievement in 2006.

In 1995 Briggs had a UK chart hit, alongside Coronation Street co-star Amanda Barrie, with a version of Frank and Nancy Sinatra's Something Stupid.

Tributes have been paid to the actor with Coronation Street actor Antony Cotton saying "we all adored him", while former soap writer Phil Ford tweeted it was "very very sad" to hear of his death.

Helen Worth, who plays Gail Platt on the cobbles, said he was "one of the Street's most memorable characters".

John Whiston, managing director of continuing drama at ITV, said Briggs had been "right at the centre of the show" for years adding: "When Mike Baldwin was in a scene it was very hard to look at anyone else."

Sally Dynevor, who plays Sally Webster, said he was a "wonderful actor", while Samia Longchambon tweeted she had "fond memories" of working with him, describing him as a "lovely man".

Presenter Piers Morgan described him as a "great character on and off screen".

Born on 5 September 1935 in Battersea, in south-west London, Briggs was evacuated to the countryside during World War II before embarking on a career in show business back in London at the age of 12.

After a break for two years of service in Germany with the Royal Tank Regiment, starting in 1953, he resumed his acting career landing roles in several Carry On films and ITV police drama No Hiding Place.

It was not until 1976 that he landed his defining role as Mike Baldwin.

The BBC has strongly condemned the online abuse experienced by reporter Sonja McLaughlan after the live broadcast of Wales' 40-24 Six Nations win over England in Cardiff.

McLaughlan interviewed England captain Owen Farrell and head coach Eddie Jones, plus Wales captain Alun Wyn Jones, after Saturday's match.

She said she had been inundated with abusive comments afterwards.

The BBC has issued a statement in support of McLaughlan.

"BBC Sport strongly condemns the online abuse experienced by Sonja McLaughlan after the Wales v England match," it said.

"Sonja has long been a key member of our Six Nations team and she absolutely has our full support."

St Johnstone lifted the Scottish League Cup for the first time as Shaun Rooney's header was enough to edge out Livingston in a scrappy final.

Both managers headed to Hampden looking to win a trophy in their debut season in charge and it was Callum Davidson's side who came out on top.

Livingston's Josh Mullin forced a good save before Rooney headed in off the post from a Craig Conway corner.

St Johnstone took control thereafter against their top-flight rivals.

Rooney, whose Premiership goal at the beginning of February ended Livingston's 14-game unbeaten run since David Martindale took charge, had proved the difference again as St Johnstone made history.

Donald Trump will give his first speech since leaving office as US president later on Sunday at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).

It comes just weeks after he was acquitted during an impeachment trial which saw some members of his own Republican party vote against him.

Mr Trump is expected to attack the actions being taken by successor Joe Biden in the Florida speech.

The CPAC appearance represents his continued influence over Republicans.

The mood of the conference so far has been extremely pro-Trump, with loyalists including Texas Senator Ted Cruz and his son Donald Trump Jr among the speakers confirmed.

Mr Trump's speech is being hotly anticipated by his supporters, given his relative absence from the political spotlight since leaving office.

Former Watford, West Ham, Newcastle and Norwich boss Glenn Roeder has died aged 65 after a long illness, the League Managers Association has announced.

Roeder, who was a defender during his playing days, began his managerial career with a spell in charge at Gillingham.

He was also a coach in the England set-up when Glenn Hoddle was manager.

The LMA said it was "very deeply saddened" at Roeder's death "after a long battle with a brain tumour".

Roeder began his playing career at Leyton Orient before going on to represent Queens Park Rangers, Newcastle, Watford and Gillingham.

He captained QPR in the 1982 FA Cup final, which his side lost to Tottenham in a replay, and to the old Second Division title in 1983.

Roeder was also part of the Newcastle team that achieved promotion from the Second Division in 1984.

"A cultured defender as a player, he managed with a studious style and was always generous with his time and ideas," said LMA chairman Howard Wilkinson.
