Skiers in the Lake District have taken advantage of unseasonal snowfall to head to the slopes for the first time in months.

Covid-19 restrictions forced the 85-year-old Lake District Ski Club to close during the winter.

Snow which started on Tuesday was deep enough by Wednesday to allow the club's tow up Raise, near Helvellyn, to run.

Members were "giddy" at the unusual sight of snow-covered mountains in May, club president Mike Sweeney said.

"I haven't seen snow at this time of year before, but I was speaking to some other members who said there was snow in June in 1963, although that was a very unusual year for weather," he said.

"It was fabulous, people were just giddy with excitement."

The big story in Shetland today is whether this Liberal Democrats stronghold might switch. It would be a huge coup for the SNP.

The Lib Dems have held this seat in the Scottish parliament since its creation in 1999, and the Westminster seat has been Liberal or Liberal Democrats for seven decades.

There are historical reasons for that allegiance but in recent years it has started to slip. In the by-election vote two years ago when Tavish Scott stood down, the Lib Dems' vote dropped nearly 20%.

Hartlepool has a Conservative MP for the first time since the constituency's creation nearly 40 years ago, after Jill Mortimer won a by-election.

Ms Mortimer beat her closest rival, Labour's Paul Williams by 6,940 votes.

The result is a blow for Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer in his first election test since taking over the party.

But the Conservatives will see it is a sign they are building on their gains in traditional Labour heartlands at the 2019 general election.

One of the downsides of being obsessed with pellet ice is that I’ve had to rely on other people to make it for me: industrial pellet ice machines are the size of dishwashers.

Pellet ice is cylindrical, with smooth sides and rough ends, as if each piece had been snapped off of a long dowel of ice.

Some positivity from me - I liked the scenes with Martin, Sonia & Dotty. There’s potential for a good little unit to develop in that household.
