The Liberal Democrats have won a parliamentary seat from the Conservatives in a constituency that has always been Tory.

Sarah Green won the Chesham and Amersham seat, overturning a majority of more than 16,000, in a by-election called after the death of Conservative Dame Cheryl Gillan.

Tory candidate Peter Fleet came second in the Buckinghamshire constituency.

Dame Cheryl won in the 2019 General Election with a majority of 16,223.

Turnout in the Buckinghamshire constituency was 52% with a total of 38,009 votes. This compares to a turnout of 76% and 55,978 votes in the 2019 General Election and 77% with 55,252 votes in 2017.

The Liberal Democrats had been hoping for an upset in the historically safe Conservative seat, with party leader Sir Ed Davey saying he thought the result was "going to be on a knife-edge".

Chesham & Amersham has had just two long-serving MPs in the 47 years since the seat was created in 1974.

Ian Gilmour served from 1974 to 1992, followed by former Welsh Secretary Dame Cheryl, who died at the age of 68 on 4 April after a long illness.

The Netherlands booked their spot in last 16 at Euro 2020 as they saw off Austria in Amsterdam to win Group C with a game to spare.

Frank de Boer's side, who beat Ukraine in their opening fixture, look to be hitting their stride as they outclassed the visitors in front of 12,000 fans at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

Talisman Memphis Depay put the hosts ahead from the spot after David Alaba brought down flying wing-back Denzel Dumfries, who capped a fine performance by adding the second from a swift break in the second half.

The Dutch, who failed to qualify for the past two major tournaments, are into the knockout stages at the European Championship for the first time since 2008.

Austria started their campaign with victory over North Macedonia and their progression will be decided in the final group match against Ukraine.

England and Scotland meet in a major tournament for the first time in 25 years at Wembley on Friday in a match with huge implications for both nations' Euro 2020 hopes.

Gareth Southgate's England will qualify for the knockout stage with a win while Scotland are seeking to keep their hopes of progressing alive.

England beat Croatia 1-0 in their Group D opener on Sunday.

Steve Clarke's Scotland were beaten 2-0 by the Czech Republic a day later.

There will be a maximum of 22,500 fans at Wembley for the 20:00 BST kick-off - 25% of its capacity - to witness the 115th meeting between England and Scotland, and their 100th in a competitive fixture.

Their previous meeting at a major tournament came in the group stages of Euro 96, as Alan Shearer and Paul Gascoigne scored in a famous 2-0 win for England at Wembley - a match in which current England boss Southgate played.

Discussing England's hopes, Head of Sports Analysis at Nielsen's Gracenote, Simon Gleave, said: "Our simulations gave England 97% chance of making it to the knockout stage before the opening match and victory in that has made the team almost certain (99.6%) of going through.

"England (13% chance) are third favourites to win Euro 2020 behind France and Belgium and are given a 78% chance of beating Scotland - the highest winning chance of any group phase match at this tournament.

"Defeat against the Czech Republic has reduced Scotland's chance of reaching the last 16 from 57% to 20%."

General elections were held in Malawi on 17 May 1994. Following the restoration of democracy the previous year, they were the first multi-party elections in the country since prior to independence in 1964. The elections for President and the National Assembly were both won by the United Democratic Front (UDF), ending the 30-year rule of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP). Former President-for-life Hastings Banda, in power since independence, was defeated in the one-round presidential election by the UDF's Bakili Muluzi.

Blackburn's Ben Brereton scored the winner on his first start for Chile as they beat Bolivia in the Copa America.

Striker Brereton, who was born in Stoke-On-Trent, played for England at youth level.

He opted to represent Chile's senior team and is eligible to play for La Roja as his mother was born there.

The 22-year-old scored inside 10 minutes when he picked up a loose ball on the edge of the box before slotting past Bolivia's Carlos Lampe.

After drawing their opener 1-1 with Argentina, Chile's win puts them top of Group A on four points, with games against Uruguay (21 June) and Paraguay (25 June) still to come.

Two matches played against England and Czech Republic and in both games had more shots on target than our much lauded opponents. No goals though which is the real pity.

My big worries about the Croatia match is two-fold at present. The lads tonight worked their socks off tonight and ran themselves into the ground. Will they be able to fully recover to put in an all-energy performance next week? Also will we manage to find the net?

US private equity firm Clayton, Dubilier & Rice is considering making a cash offer to acquire Morrisons, the UK's fourth-largest supermarket group.

It has 28 days to make a formal bid for the company or withdraw.

The company said it "notes the press speculation regarding a potential transaction" and it confirmed it was considering a possible offer.

It has previously made investments in the discount shop chain B&M, from which it made more than £1bn.

Last month, Morrisons said sales had had increased by 2.7% in the 14 weeks to 9 May, saying the pandemic had led to a "renaissance of the supermarket" as Brits enjoy cooking at home more.
