The number of deaths related to Covid-19 has passed 500,000 in Brazil, the second-highest in the world, as experts say the outbreak could worsen amid slow vaccination and the start of winter.

The virus continues to spread as President Jair Bolsonaro refuses to back measures like social distancing.

The health institute Fiocruz says the situation is "critical". Only 15% of adults are fully vaccinated.

Congress is investigating the government's handling of the pandemic.

President Bolsonaro has been heavily criticised for not implementing a co-ordinated national response and for his scepticism toward vaccines, lockdowns and mask-wearing requirements, which he has sought to loosen.

The opposition accuses the president of delaying the purchase of vaccines for political reasons, as he has consistently played down the severity of the pandemic.

Wales are within touching distance of the Euro 2020 knockout stage as they visit Rome for their final group game against an Italy side in ominous form.

Italy are unbeaten in 29 matches, winning their previous 10 without conceding a single goal.

They are already through to the last 16 having won their first two games, while Wales have all but guaranteed their passage with four points so far.

"It's going to be a big challenge," said Wales captain Gareth Bale.

"Even if that record wasn't there, Italy are a big footballing nation and always make games difficult.

"It would be a great result if we could win. Our aim is to win the game - none of us ever go into a match to get a draw. We have a gameplan which we think can hurt them."

I’m generally happy to have something like that put into the game so long as it brings good gameplay. That being said I hope Ridley is used more sparingly or is even exempt from the post fusion games (if that ever happens). I’d like to see the story move forward to newer things.

Wales demonstrated great resolve in defeat against Italy as they clung on with 10 men for a result which was enough to secure their place in the second round of Euro 2020.

Their automatic qualification was under threat with Switzerland beating Turkey 3-1 in Group A's other fixture, but Wales withstood relentless Italian pressure to scrape through in second place on goal difference.

Italy had already qualified for the last 16 and, despite making eight changes to their team, they were still utterly dominant, Matteo Pessina's goal giving them a 1-0 half-time lead which scarcely reflected their superiority.

Wales were forced to play the final half an hour a man down after Ethan Ampadu was sent off for a lunge on Federico Bernardeschi, intensifying the Italian onslaught.

And although Italy's win was never in doubt - this was their 30th consecutive match without defeat, equalling their national record - Wales dug deep to ensure the margin of victory was not too damaging.

Finishing third may well have been enough for Wales to progress as one of the tournament's four best third-placed teams, but this result ensured they kept their destiny in their own hands.

As for Italy, an 11th consecutive win will see them face Group C's second-placed team at Wembley on the same day.

Hartlepool United returned to the English Football League as they beat Torquay United 5-4 on penalties, despite Gulls goalkeeper Lucas Covolan scoring a stoppage-time equaliser.

Luke Armstrong's first-half strike looked to have sealed promotion for Pools after Torquay's Kyle Cameron had headed goals disallowed in either half.

Covolan headed in a 95th-minute cross to send the game into extra time.

Torquay's Matt Buse missed a sudden-death penalty to see Pools go up.

In a game that had everything it was fitting that it ended with a sudden-death shootout - all four opening penalties were missed with Covolan saving from Nicky Featherstone and Armstrong while Billy Waters and Danny Wright missed for the Gulls.

Each side then scored their next four spot-kicks before substitute Buse's effort down the middle was parried on to the crossbar by Brad James.

It means Hartlepool will join National League champions Sutton United in League Two next season after four years in non-league.

Happy to see them back in the Football League. After letting in a late equaliser and missing their first two penalties they showed a lot of bottle to get over the line.
