A referendum on reintroducing multi-party democracy was held in Malawi on 14 June 1993. Over 64% of voters voted to end the Malawi Congress Party's 31-year monopoly on power. Soon afterwards President Hastings Banda, leader since independence, was stripped of both his post of President for life and most of the dictatorial powers he had held since the institution of one-party rule in 1966. General elections were held the following year, in which Banda was defeated. Voter turnout for the referendum was 67% of the 4.7 million registered voters.

Former Louisiana Gov. Edwin Edwards who turns 94 in August, announced Tuesday that he has entered hospice care after being hospitalized Sunday with pain in his right lung.
The four-term former governor, whose three-decade dominance of Louisiana politics was all but overshadowed by an eight-year stretch in federal prison, downplayed the end-of-life aspect of hospice care.
“While people assume that hospice means I’m dying, I assure everyone it’s simply a matter of good and convenient care that is less trouble for everybody,” Edwards said in joint statement with his wife, Trina.

Bukayo Saka is expected to start Wednesday's Euro 2020 semi-final with Denmark in place of Jadon Sancho.
Arsenal forward Saka, 19, was outstanding in the last-16 victory against Germany on 29 June.
It is expected to be the only change in Gareth Southgate's starting line-up at Wembley as England look to reach a first major tournament final since the 1966 World Cup final.
Saka missed Saturday's 4-0 quarter-final win against Ukraine with injury.
Sancho made his first start in the tournament in the last-eight game in Rome.

England failed to qualify for the World Cup in 1974, 1978 and 1994. The team's earliest exit in the finals tournament was its elimination in the first round in 1950, 1958 and, most recently, the 2014 FIFA World Cup. This was after being defeated in both their opening two matches for the first time, against Italy and Uruguay in Group D.
Roger Federer's bid for a ninth Wimbledon title is over after he was stunned in straight sets by Hubert Hurkacz in the quarter-finals.
The Swiss lost 6-3 7-6 (7-4) 6-0 to the 14th seeded Pole, who reached his first Grand Slam semi-final.
It is the first time 20-time major champion Federer has lost a set to love at the All England Club.
Hurkacz will play Matteo Berrettini or Felix Auger-Aliassime for a place in Sunday's final.
"It's super special for me," said Hurkacz, only the second Polish man to reach the semi-finals at a Grand Slam.
"Playing here and the special things [Federer] has done here, it's a dream come true."
Hurkacz, who was six when Federer won his first title at SW19, is the first player to win a set to love against the Swiss since Rafael Nadal in the 2008 French Open final.
Federer, at 39 years and 337 days, had been bidding to become the oldest man to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals in the Open era.
But defeat marked his first straight-set loss at Wimbledon in 19 years and left pundits and fans wondering whether this could turn out to be his final appearance at the grass-court Grand Slam.
