Cardiff City are still hopeful of appointing a new manager by the end of May having started to interview candidates.
The Bluebirds have received more than 100 applications and whittled those down to a shortlist of around six, sources at the League One-bound club have told BBC Sport Wales.
Cardiff had three different managers as they were relegated from the Championship this season and are now looking for a ninth boss in four years.
Charlton Athletic manager Nathan Jones, former Oxford United head coach Des Buckingham, recently sacked Hull City boss Ruben Selles and ex-Bolton Wanderers manager Ian Evatt are among those who have been linked to the job.
But sources have ruled out former Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard and ex-Rangers boss Michael Beale.
Cardiff are trialling a new process for this appointment, creating a sub-committee – including former Swansea City sporting director Mark Allen and a representative of the Wasserman agency – to compile a longlist and then shortlist of potential candidates.
Chairman Mehmet Dalman and chief executive Ken Choo have now started interviewing those contenders.
Club owner Vincent Tan, who has faced fierce criticism from Cardiff fans lately, will have the final say.
Dalman said earlier this month that he hopes to have the appointment confirmed by the end of May.

Aberdeen earned a sensational first Scottish Cup victory in 35 years as Dimitar Mitov's penalty shootout saves from Callum McGregor and Alistair Johnston ensured they came from behind at Hampden to deny Celtic a treble.
Alfie Dorrington's own goal just before half-time had Brendan Rodgers' holders and favourites ahead and apparently in control.
But a resolute Aberdeen hung in and were rewarded after 83 minutes when substitute Shayden Morris' teasing cross was inexplicably diverted into his own net by goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel.
That moment opened the door for a scarcely unimaginable outcome and Aberdeen would seize upon their big moment at the end of a rollercoaster season.
After Celtic captain McGregor had his opening penalty saved by Mitov, Aberdeen scored four fine spot-kicks before their goalkeeper plunged low to push away Johnston's effort and ensure his place in Pittodrie legend.
It also confirms Aberdeen will have European League football throughout the autumn and gives manager Jimmy Thelin silverware in his first season in charge.

Graeme Shinnie says he "could retire today and be a happy man" after achieving his dream of captaining Aberdeen to a historic Scottish Cup triumph.
On his 300th appearance for the club, 33-year-old Shinnie led the Pittodrie side to a stunning penalty shootout victory over treble-chasing Celtic.
The veteran midfielder captained Inverness Caledonian Thistle to Scottish Cup success 10 years ago and says his achievement a decade on "means everything".
"I haven't been afraid to say it, but this is what I've been desperate for," Shinnie told BBC Scotland in the immediate aftermath at Hampden.
"I didn't want my career to go on and not win silverware for this club. It's sheer relief, knowing my family is up there. It's the best feeling in the world.
"It's my 300th appearance for the club, everything was just lining up. I could retire today and be a happy man."

KFC has announced plans to create 7,000 new jobs across the UK and Ireland as part of a £1.5bn investment which will include new restaurants.
The fried chicken chain said it would focus on setting up shops in "key locations" such as Ireland and north west England, where it first launched in Britain 60 years ago when it opened a restaurant in Preston.
Consumers in the UK and Ireland spend billions of pounds in fried chicken fast food chains every year.
KFC has set out its five-year growth plan as its rivals expand in Britain and Ireland, including Wingstop and Popeyes, famed for catering singer Beyoncé and rapper Jay-Z's wedding in 2009.
KFC said that it will plough nearly £500m into 500 new sites as well as upgrading existing shops. It currently has more than 1,000 restaurants across the UK and Ireland, the majority of which are operated by franchisees.
It said the 7,000 new jobs it expects to create in the UK and Ireland will include servers, kitchen-based roles and managers.
KFC added that it will invest in its supply chain to "strengthen long-standing relationships" such as with Pilgrim's Europe, which is based in Warwick, and McCormick in Buckinghamshire which makes the fast-food firm's gravy.
KFC is by far the largest fried chicken chain in Britain. But in recent years, smaller competitors have been growing including America's Wingstop which, in December last year, sold its UK arm to US private equity firm Sixth Street for £400m.
Wingstop currently has around 57 franchised sites in the UK and plans to open another 20.
Meanwhile, Popeyes UK has 65 restaurants across the UK and Ireland after a big expansion last year when it opened 33 shops.
According to market research firm Kantar, Britons spent about £2.8bn on fried chicken from fast food shops in the year to 20 April.
Dave's Hot Chicken - the US brand which counts rapper Drake and actor Samuel L Jackson among its backers - opened its first restaurant in the UK last year, located in London, and plans to launch a further 60 shops in the UK and Ireland.

Emma Raducanu's miserable record against Iga Swiatek continued as she was outclassed by the defending champion in their French Open second-round meeting.
The British number two was beaten 6-1 6-2 on the Paris clay and has now lost all five of her matches against the five-time Grand Slam winner.
It was another reminder of the gulf that still exists between 41st-ranked Raducanu and the leading players on the WTA Tour.
After being unable to convert a break point in the opening game, 22-year-old Raducanu quickly lost her way as fifth seed Swiatek rattled off five games in a row.
Raducanu's second serve was placed under serious pressure and her groundstrokes became increasingly ragged as the 23-year-old from Poland secured the opening set in 35 minutes.
Swiatek, who has won four of the past five Roland Garros titles, is known as the 'Queen of Clay' because of her formidable record here and quickly moved a break ahead at 2-1 in the second set.
After a below-par clay-court swing, though, there are some questions about her level and they resurfaced when Raducanu threatened to break back immediately.
But Swiatek managed to maintain her intensity under pressure - one of the key differences between players of her status and Raducanu - to save three break points in a lengthy fourth game.
Raducanu, who was sick before her opening match on Monday, began to run out of steam and lost the final three games with little resistance.
