Spurs v Arsenal in the Wenger Era

He took a while to properly settle in, aside from the two class goals against Chelsea on his first start.

The only thing I find amusing about the whole thing is, that at their age of 20, 21, Reyes was the one expected to turn into a world star, whereas RVP was thought not to have the right temperament.

Fecking Jose. Fecking RVP

Question for the gooners:

Do you hate van nistelrooy as much as we hate that judas turncoat?

Super, Arsenal fans were saying he was going to be better than Ronaldo.

"Do you hate van nistelrooy as much as we hate that judas turncoat?"

Do you mean RVP?

I'm pretty sure you hate Sol more.

Deep down, RVP left for more trophies. If it was just money, he would've gone to City. All Arsenal fans know that.

I do feel a bit sorry for Arsene though - he was the one who kept faith in Van Persie through all the attitude and injury problems, which there were a lot of, even when many Arsenal fans weren't sure whether we should keep him.

If RVP didn't feel he owed Arsenal, he definitely owed it to Wenger not to leave as soon as he lost his injury-proneness.

"Super, Arsenal fans were saying he was going to be better than Ronaldo."

It seems hilarious now, but he really was very good! And Ronaldo was still in his silly spaghetti-haired, scrawny teenager phase.

It was impossible to see then how their careers would turn out.

Yeah, it's impossible to see it would have panned out this way but we knew Ronaldo was and would become better.

Reyes really wasn't that good.

What Sol did was the closest thing to outright treachery you can get in the sport of football. RVP is a bit of a choker for Arsenal fans, but it's not quite the same. RVP didn't come through the ranks, he didn't go to the arch rivals, and he went for £22m+.

No I meant van nistelrooy.

One of the managers at work is arsenal-mad but she never swears.... Mention van nistelrooy and she automatically says "dirty cheating bas----, I f------- hate him"

I disagree on that. He was a bit lightweight, just as Ronaldo was. The difference being that Ronaldo worked his socks off and became an incredible athlete as well as a great player.

Purely talent-wise, Reyes was sharp, but he was just a bit of a wuss.

I've never been too fussed with van Nistelrooy. Great goalscorer. But we had Henry at his peak at that time so I never felt irked by him.

Supergoon - you make some good points. Wenger always said RVP could be one of the very best if he could overcome the injuries - obviously he saw him a lot more than the average Joe in training etc - and he was right. RVP's technique is exceptional, truly a world class striker (how does such a small country produce all these fabulous players!!). So yeah, although he didn't owe the fans he certainly owed Wenger a repayment of faith. But he's now 29, it'll be his last big contract, he had to strike when the iron was hot - you can't blame him, and he certainly didn't go for the dish like Cole.

Darren, sorry mate, but Reyes was a very talented player. He just was a bit of a pansy which is a big factor as to why he couldn't get used to English football, it was the physicality of the league. But in terms of technical ability, vision and natural ability, he was extremely talented. It was a shame his career went down the pan.

I know some Arsenal fans have habits of criminally overrating players, but Reyes is not one of them. It's a shame he didn't work out.

We'll has to agree to disagree. Never rated Reyes. Average player. Ronaldo was always a far superior player.

Ronaldo went from being a lightweight show pony to a physical monster and powerful, influential world class goal machine almost overnight. It's like there are two versions of him.

Ace, he was still a good skillfull winger before the 06 world cup. People say he was a one trick pony but it's bull. He did absolutely transform in such a small space of time though. In 06/07 he really improved his consistency and end product, he wasn't that different from the season before in terms of the way he played. I preferred the Ronaldo of that season to any of the seasons since, even though he wasn't as good as he is now.

Ace Face has good football knowledge. I rate Ace Face highly.

He would definitely be in the JA606 all star team...

I wouldn't.

Switch Ljunberg for Pires while taking Overmars to the right to accomodate Pires on the left.

I concede, if it was a contest for spelling footballers names you'd win. You could put the trophy next to your 'most pointless boring prɨck of the year' award
