For the past 25 years I have been afraid, afraid to show whom I really was because of fear.

That's his point
I think they need to man up and just come out
will it be any different from a gay man getting abuse on the street??
in the end itll be the press that stoke the flames with lines like
'and Jim Davidson(made up name) the only gay player in British football to have came out got the 1st goal'
It's no ones fault.
From reading that extract it sounds like the boy became disillusioned with football and wanted to call it quits. I don't think the fact that he's came out as gay really makes a difference.
People shouldn't be scared of what the idiots in the stands think, if you're gay you should be proud. You shouldn't have to hide.
Another factor me thinks, is the general acceptance of being gay especially in most part of Asia and Africa bar South Africa. Rogers should have continue playing imo, instead of chickening out. He makes it difficult for future players willing to come out have a double thought.
He didn't chicken out, he just simply choose not to play anymore. There's a difference.
Choices
1) come out
2) dont come out
there are pros and cons for both so there are arguments for both sides.
it doesn't really affect me too much so I don't care what they do, i wont judge them either way, i just care about the football... which at the end of the day.... should i even care about?
why quit? for him it must be like getting into the showers with a group for glamour models
seriously ....
i couldnt care less about players sexual preference ......who cares about this robbie rodgers chap...
whatever yer happy with
I hate them, I'm glad he quit
