'I was sceptical of Mertesacker's appointment and his task of modernising the academy. But it is obvious that a lot of thought went into his role and it wasn't an attempt to save a year of his wages. So I am very happy to give him a chance'
..now that the first team squad is starting to benefit from his work.
Per has proved his worth. Hopefully Raul can also step up to the mark this summer, and we'll put last summer down to teething problems
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I am a fan of Per the manager.
I wouldn't put the last summer down to teething problems. It was the change between Mislintat and Edu. Interesting if none of Mislintat's signings work out. Even Leno might go if Martinez continues to perform.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
In fairness Tierney has looked good.
Still gobsmacked we spent so much on Pepe, when the midfield needed serious investment.

Decent.
They'll want more than that to extend, I bet.
Wonder whether he'd want to stay another season now though?

Emery wanted a winger first and as Gt kept on telling us he loved Xhaka.
Tierney was Edu signing as was Pepe.
Anyone else already forgetting Unai Emery was once Arsenal manager
I think there is a misconception that if a team doesn't perform the players want to go. The players are responsible of how the team performs. I think if they are frozen out its different. I think Auba and Ceballos both want to stay. Or Arteta wouldn't be playing them. I feel Laca is going but with Eddie suspended there is no choice.
How much Madrid will want for Ceballos is a different matter though. Would love to see a midfield of Ceballos Partey.

I said at the time, although it may have been a statement of intent, it was also telling that other clubs weren't willing to match that price for him.
Pepe isn't a bad player, but I can't see him being more than a 8-10 goals and 8-10 assists a season player. Again, not bad, but for £72m, you'd expect more on the ROI.
What I also couldn't wrap my head around was Ziyech, who is a self-proclaimed Arsenal fan, had a release clause of £25m last Summer. If we'd signed him, instead of Pepe, we'd have had an extra £47m that could have been spent on a new midfielder/CB or both if our recruitment team were shrewd enough.
It was a poor distribution of resources.

I think Pépé was a compromise between what Emery wanted (Zaha) and what the board wanted.
Emery wasn't keen at all on Ziyech, neither was the board apparently.
We will find out if we missed out next season
But given our lack of creativity in the last two years, it is gross negligence to not strengthen our midfield with all the issues we've faced.
Maybe they thought Ceballos would be that guy, but to spend the bulk of our transfer money on Pepe, whilst neglecting our midfield, was poor.

My only hope come from the fact that De Jong hasn't really settle in Barca but they have their own internal issues there so could be just the environment.
Ziyech reminds me a lot of Mahrez.

So you think one of the biggest oil investors in football being excluded had nothing to do with no money anywhere in Europe with another possible season behind closed doors.
Don't tell me you are that naive.

I miss our old French scouting system. Cygan, Squillaci, Giroud. Top top top top players.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
At least we managed to have international footy with them.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Because of them or in-spite them.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
They were part of the team that managed to bring us CL or at least EL footy.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Were they? or were they the sign of our decline. And a lot of similar signings followed.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It's a fact.
