Simple answer. They werent never midtable. They sacked Lampard in the middle of that season. No one knows where they would have end at the end of the season under Lampard. Players were all there.

With or without Xhaka I think results will catch up with performances as the season progresses.

Obviously it's great to not have him making us far far worse but our current position seems pretty inflated vs the level the side are playing at

Not sure about that. Two of our main issues was Xhaka and Leno and both have been fixed. Unless of course Arteta creates a problem by bringing Xhaka back.

I am now resigned to the fact we will never be free scoring under Arteta. But as long as he sticks to 4-4-1-1, I think we will score enough to make the top 4.
