Bizarre that we extended his contract when we did.
=======
Why? His task was to get Europa. Anything more was seen as a bonus. He is hitting all his targets - reducing wage bill, building a young squad, cutting the troublemakers, getting Europe.

Makes some sense as a target to not be sacked mid season. Not for a new contract, that should wait until he's shown he can do more.

He's 8th, 8th, 250m no other destractions, 5th. Just seems too early to renew when we're still so unconvincing when it matters and fell short when often clubs perform well in this scenario due to less games.

The club just expect less than I do and are apparently happy with the level we are under Arteta, seems crazy to me as a fan though - that's the point. The decision imo (along with many fans) to aware a new contract was given too early

Reduce the wage bill, get rid of troublemakers, reduce the age of the squad and be in top 6 by mid point or get sacked?? Nah.

Should trawl through the archives to point out all the posters, experts, pundits who felt, at the start of the season, top 4 was impossible, top 6 unlikely and even top half a big task. And then ask them why it is a sackable offence to finish 5th.

That's how football works though sometimes, 3rd/4th/5th one year is more doable than others, we had our rivals for CL and Europa sack their managers mid season because they did so badly. We were poor at the start, great in the middle (results wise anyway) then poor again when it mattered at the end. We also went out of the FA Cup against Forest although not the end of the world obviously.

But all of that is just what happened. When you watch us, we're so unconvincing unless everything is just right and there's no rotation/squad management which is still needed even with a reduced fixture list.

Arteta is learning, he did enough to keep his job but again imo we've extended his stay prematurely. We'll see next season though, fingers crossed we can make the step up.

Think Arteta will be sacked by Xmas

White, Gabriel & Partey all in training today. No sign of Tomiyasu.

I was calling for us to wait to the end of the season before extending Arteta but even I thought the contract was offered at the right time. I don't think anyone expected us to collapse a second time after beating Chelsea, Utd and West Ham.

Arsenal would have extended Arteta's contract nonetheless.

Kroenkes obviously had Europa as the main target, which is why they announced his extension as soon as soon as it was confirmed.

I have some doubts now seeing how we've collapsed (again).

The way KSE are spending I doubt Arteta's exit cost will be an issue if things don't improve.

Yeah true although it will still put a dent in things

Unless Arteta learns how to make comebacks in games or learns how to draw games when playing bad, I genuinely think he will be sacked by Xmas.

31 games lost under Arteta in 2 and half season is a facking disgraceful stat

A stat that earned him a new contract. He ain’t getting sacked unless we have a similar start to last season, and even then he could still survive.

Why some on this thread always put everything down what Arteta has achieved so far and can't see any progress makes me sick.

GT, there has been some progress, but the progress, in my opinion, hasn't been enough.

When you factor in us playing one game a week, Spurs under Nuno being a disasterclass, United being way worse than any of us expected and us leading the way in 4th for most of the second-half of this season, how much progress has there been really?

We're only going to finish the league with 5-8 points more than last season. So, when you accumulate all those other factors in, yes, there's been some improvement, but not the scale that we needed or wanted.

As a club, we keep making amateurish mistakes when we're in promising situations and it's frustrating that we never learn.

Samir, yes season has been a rollercoaster of ups and downs. It was expected with the young team we have. Arteta had all hands to do to sort out this mess held us back over some seasons. We havent been there and it was clear that it will take sometimes. We have argued about our January window which was a big risk on Edu's and Arteta's side. I wouldnt have taken it.

I believe injuries played a big part that we havent reached the optimum. But then we achieved at least the minimum.

Arteta said we have to improve and that Arsenal will do the necessary in the summer transfer window. We will see how it pans out then.
