Not remotely surprising, several studies have already shown this.
Music industry simply don't understand things change. They see people are getting music for free so automatically assume they are losing out and want a cut when it isn't that simple.
Problem is the people in charge are too greedy and completely out of touch.

                     its true...
i have never bought a cd/tape in my life - even when there was no internet to download music.
also why should i have to buy DVDs or Videos when they will be shown on my TV and Sky(that i pay a license for).

                     Not killing, but hurting. Although I'd say really only hurting the already 'big' artists and bands, who probably don't notice the difference.
For artists/bands that are 'smaller' and trying to break through, makes no difference

Does anyone genuinely believe that music piracy hasn't affected sales at all?
====================
Yeah you're right, piracy is beneficial to sales.

                     HMV sold C60s and C90s decades ago and even had inserts to write the tracks on
But they were only for use with personal recording and not for copying music on or taping the top 40 on radio 1 on a Sunday night. Yeah, of course they were.
Piracy has always happened. If people can save a quid, they will.

                     The only people hurt by piracy are the corporate middle men and, honestly, I am fine with that. The greatest musicians have turned piracy in their favour and are benefiting from it.

                     a number of bittorrent sites are now blocked in the UK as of today, kickass for one, following a high court order on UK ISP's

Maybe.
I reckon that downloading stuff for free opens people up to a lot of music they wouldn't otherwise know about and which they will subsequently pay for. This effect can't really be measured but I imagine the two sides of the coin cancel each other out.
I also agree with Poppin's comment.
