I think Phil might have goofed a bit there then. I did think it was Gerrard, but his comment made me think that someone else might have been for those games

I thought Hypia was still captain.Ok as captain he started off well winning the ECL and FA cup in successive seasons early in his captaincy but then the trophies died off as has his influence on the pitch.

1 trophy won in 7 seasons as they can't win anything this season during Gerrards prime playing years shows the decline of the club and of the players influence.

As I've said all along England would be so much better with Hodgson and Gerrard not involved.

So last year he was good, this year he's in decline. What about between 06-11? Was he in decline then just because Liverpool hadn't won anything? To put Liverpool's failings down to one man is frankly ridiculous. Yes, he is probably a part of the reason, but there are 10 other players on the pitch too. The time between trophies is largely irrelevant as your logic seems to say he has been in decline and is losing his influence, yet only recently Liverpool won something with him there, which would indicate that you're wrong...

He is neither the reason they won, nor the reason they aren't winning anything this season.

Of course Gerrard is in decline and many a Liverpool supporter has said on here even the start of this season that Gerrard shouldn't be in the team.

My article is about Gerrard and Hodgson not being the right people to captain or manage England and no-one has come up with anything to counter that.

I don't think England should be continuing to player Gerrard, but the fact remains he has arguably been the best performer during and since the last Euros. At the same time, you have to ask yourself who do we have in the squad that is ready to be England captain? Cole? Rooney? Hart? None of those IMO are captain 'material'.

IMO, the best place for Gerrard, if we have a fully fit England team in the next 2 years or so, would be to come on as a sub at 60 or so minutes if we need a change in the way we play. With Cleverley and Wilshere starting.

As has been said about Hodgson, he isn't even close to the worst England manager we've had. He has had a fairly average squad to work with and is still picking up results. He is playing the youth which we have all been shouting at England managers to play for the last 5 years. No, we're not playing attractive football really, but we've looked good in short bursts.

Who else would you get in to manage instead of Hodgson? IMO Redknapp would go back to picking names and our youth would rarely get a look in...

Gerrard is 33 in 8 weeks time so his time in the role as England captain is nearing its end hopefully.The main problems for me is that as captain he will be picked for the team no matter what.This restricts the development of younger players who will have to fill in when he leaves.It also means that the likes of Frank Lampard for instance will be overlooked because his role is similar to Gerrards often despite the fact Lampard could be on form or simply the best player to play that role in any given game.

What the FA have done in installing Roy as manager is simply gone for the easy option as he doesn't have the baggage on a personal level that others have had and he's not exactly going to make sweeping measures in team selection or style of play.

It's a short term fix that in the end will again fail.The FA have no long term plans and because of this England will fall further and further behind the big boys of World football.

When other countries play 'senior' players it doesn't seem to be an issue. It's even praised.

To me this comes across as club rivalry based.

So if Gerrard at 33 in your opinion stops younger players from developing, why advocate for Lampard- who is even older - to be in the team?

I said not only does Gerrard as captain in the team stop the development of younger potentially better players replacing him it also stops other players who maybe have more to offer or in form replacing him also.I put Lampard as an example of that.

Roy already had in mind to play Gerrard against Montenegro no matter what.If Lampard had scored a hatrick against San Marino and set the other 5 goals up he still would not have got in over Captain Gerrard.

That's the point,as long as Hodgson is manager and Gerrard is captain then we are going nowhere.Gerrard plays no matter how poor he is because he's the captain and Hodgson will again fail in his duties as a manager

Gerrard was woeful the other night.

But so were others. If he can be so inspirational for an average Liverpool side, why not for this average England side

You can always tell if an article like this gets to some people by the amount of times you get a poster saying things like 'WUM failure'.

Also posters who bring in players from your own team to try and get a rise from you.
