Very good player i rate him highly, yet another quality belgian. Him, Luiz and Nastastic have all been quality this season

Anyway, Vertonghen is a superb defender that has had a few bad games at left back (not his position) and made a few dodgy mistakes but please name me a defender that dosen't? Brilliant on the ball, scores goals and tackling is superb.

Don the media always overhype any little mistake these type of defenders ( ball players / footballers ) make, it's like Luiz. He wasn't that great last season and was under constant criticism from the media yet he has improved 10 fold this season and apart from a few rash challenges he hasn't had a bad game, yet they don't offer no praise whatsoever

Oscar, i think probably Luiz and Vertonghen are pretty similar in a way. Both excellent and strong but prone to the odd error. Both awesome on the ball and can hit the ball sweetly, both score goals.

i rate him...fine first season...not perfect by a long chalk...especially wen at LB...but then for a first season in a new league i think its a fine effort.


and goals from the back....how longs it been since we had that....very valuable bonus....

don. dont be naughty. i am a vertonghen fan, i am just not getting carried away with his great attacking as his defensive work has plenty of room for improvement... he messed up again on saturday and it cost us

ridicuous that he is in the team of the year tbh.

I agree with Junction. Can fill in at LB but nowhere near as good there.

Not perfect but a solid season, been brilliant at times

I was a bit critical when posters were claiming he should be an automatic starter as soon as he joined the club. I also labelled him as "sluggish" following a couple of the pre-season friendly displays, but he slowly but surely convinced me that he was a very competent CB and he has turned out to be a very good buy.

He's totally average at LB, but i wont judge him for his performances there too much because its not his rightful position, and i'm not sure he has performed to a standard to be considered 2nd best CB in the league, but overall i'm a fan of big Jan.

(And i'm a poet but dont even know it ).

i wld agree that he maybe shldnt have made TOTY....but hey ho...

overall far more plusses than faults.

I agree that he shouldn't be in the team of the year, but he has done well.

Ive noticed recently that he has stopped getting forward. It's really since the sandro injury, but now he never comes forward apart from for set pieces.

Is this good for his game or not ?

he was poor for the first goal on sat and seems to see things to late when it comes to corners and freekicks but overall a good buy and hope with Kaboul along side him he will improve to be a legend at the lane

Still think the guy is limited defensively, but he is a modern day defender. Great on the ball first, can defend second. Personally I prefer a CB who is a donkey on the ball but is an expert defender, but he has been pretty impressive considering that this is his first season for us and he is still relatively young

Verts is a worthy contender for team of the season, having had to play all season with some dire central defensive partners.
