" monaco are instantly big despite nobody there caring and them having a tiny ground."
They don't exactly need a bigger one considering it can hold half of Moncao and I very much doubt even half of Monaco care about football
A big clubs have in this modern era would go 23 years and counting without winning a title. Some clubs fans will play the history card, but to go 23 years and counting without winning a title means you WERE a big club and are no more or you are not as big a club as once you were.
chelsea have a tiny ground but win things due to spending as outlined above... it really is that simple... money money money.

How does chelsea have a tiny ground? the difference between them and liverpool is about 1000 capacity?
I think a big club is a mixture of all and just common sense. I believe theres 10 clubs in the UK where you could find a shirt of that club. The difference between say a crystal palace who are a good club and watford for example is vast to utd, chelsea, liverpool, tottenham etc.
A club that builds a fan base over time but also wins things.
Chelsea hold the record for a domestic game attendance of over 100,000 with arsenal for example.
I also believe it is harder for london clubs as there are so many more teams to choose and pick to support from.
was anybody calling city a big club when they were in league one??
..................
Lots of people actually, especially as we were filling Maine Road for the likes of Lincoln, and York
Blimey where do everton rank then?
If Chelsea owner leaves today they'll be in a lot of trouble. Don't think a big club should rely on a billionaire for success.

Arsenal are big but have won nothing recently and are yet to win the biggest one. United and Liverpool are the biggest.

You HAVE referred to??!! what Dr Phil are you losing it!!??
Who gives one? I mean really? Who actually cares which clubs are considered 'big'? You said yourself, people will change to definition to fit their club/argument. It's petty playground stuff that even most on here should have left behind years ago.
In the battle to be best of the rest Liverpool FC in the past 2 seasons have failed to live up to their 'biggest midtable club in world football' by finishing behind Newcastle and Everton and the Everton in the past 2 seasons.
Even in the alsorans league you can't muster enough points to come out on top.
Money doesnt make u a big club, cos anybody with Billions can buy the best players and managers and win trophys its like 1 guy who's got a Fiesta1.4 racing a guy in a Fiesta 2.0 ST, theres only going to be 1 winner

The perfect answer !!!!
But Dr Phil you HAVE referred to Everton as a big club???
Its a mixture of history, success, fan base, stadium etc Its all rather subjective. I think its fair the say that Madrid and or Barcelona are currently the biggest clubs. Madrid have the better history, and Barca have the current success. Both have a large fan base and Stadium.
Man United are probably next along with maybe the like of Bayern. The transfer of Ronaldo to Madrid showed that Madrid are probably bigger than United.
Milan, Juventus and Liverpool have the history, but not so much the success.
Arsenal have the fan base, but not the recent success. History in Europe is also lacking.
Chelsea have the current success, but are lacking the successful history.
Show me Scouse-heart where I say Everton are on the same level as the United and Chelsea,Real Madrid etc.
I look forward to reading where I have said that
A lot also depends on what league you are playing in. Rangers and Celtic would be much 'bigger' if they played in the PL. They would be able to attract better players and would have the money to pay for them, despite the fact that CL qualification would no longer be a given (yeah, yeah, I'm talking about Celtic)
Similarly Anzhi are probably as wealthy as Chelsea but are they as 'big'.
Money is transient and if wealthy clubs cannot create a 'history' before the money dries up they will quickly revert to being smaller clubs.
Surely if your a fan of Crawley, doncaster, York ect they will be the biggest team for yourself, its a ridiculous concept mostly argued by Liverpool & Arsenal fans who are grasping at straws cause they arnt as succesful on the pitch recently as they believe they should be, the whole concept of a "Big club" reaks of arrogance & snobishness, like they & they alone have the right to win titles.
Also I think what is important is the size of your local support. The hardcore supporters. Money will bring you lots of corporates and overseas fans, but it is the local hardcore supporters which support you through the good times and the bad. These are the foundation of the club. The more you have, the bigger the club.
