I wonder just how much the presence of the royal family brings in to the country with regards to tourism, etc. All well and good saying how much they drain, or whatever. I'm willing to bet they do a hell of a lot of good for the country
Privatise them then, guarantee the don't make anything near what they take from the pot. People that buy into this fairytale, dragons and unicorns, royal family are the biggest idiots around. Embarrassing seeing people at the jubilee's, weddings and all the rest of it celebrating a ruling class.

You are correct. Whilst they cost the state money, they bring in upteen times more than that. If we didnt have the royal family in our capital, the UK would have gone down the swanny by now.
To Liz....
agreed...tourism and trade and commerce they attract far outweighs the cost of keeping them....
that said....someonne shld reign in prince andrews spending......
In all honesty the post was tongue in cheek.I have yet to see actual proof of the 'tourism income' argument which I have long regarded as a sort of urban myth. All that having been said I suspect that the irony is that QE2's acknowledged wry sense of humour would see article for what it is and at the end of the day our nation does have more serious problems than the pros and cons of a priveleged family of aristos.

To be honest I think the tourism argument sounds like propaganda to maintain the status quo. Regardless of the money they bring in, could they not survive on, say, £20m?

Probably, but if they bring in 5 times what they cost then i dont really see the problem.

In theory a ruling monarch protects us from the kind of nutcase that was able to take power in Germany in the 30's. They could tell the PM to fack off, put the army on the streets and sort it all out. They've got the best interests of the country at heart cos we give em all that lovely money. Everyone's a winner. 'cept the bears they use for the guards' hats.
