all 22 players on the pich at old trafford were anonymous in chelsea-united game not just lampard
Has Roy even figured out that if we do qualify we're playing the world cup in Brazil? If he has why on Earth is he still trying to build a team round two 33 year old midfielders.
Aren't they both around 35 now?
What I would say, is he way we played vs Brazil at Wembley is the way we should go. Very exciting football ventured around Clevs and Wilshere with Gerrard sitting deep (who was very disciplined and kept he ball well).
Weirdly enough in the last World Cup qualifying campaign Lampard and Gerrard both played well together and helped batter Croatia 5-1.
On lamps and Gerrard, as a pair it's ridiculous because we aren't going to to win the WC so long term it's pointless. I think they are being used to get us over the line and to qualify.
It's sad that Gerrard gets picked ahead of Carrick in that role. No doubt Gerrard was a top player a few years back as an attacking force.
But to be picked against England's finest deep sitting central midfielder just shows you everything that is wrong with the England team. I don't think there is one aspect of Gerrard's game that is better than Carrick's for that role; positional sense, control, composure, distribution, keeping possession, all attributes Carrick excels at where Gerrard does not. The only area you could possibly say Gerrard is better is his long passing but even that I'm not sure, the only reason people will say Gerrard is better is because he tries to make about 50 in a game where as Carrick will only attempt them if it's the right option.
i wouldnt even watch an england game for free, i feel for you english people you have to go through this torture of watching this comic show that is the england national football team
Carrick isn't good enough to start
I think they are being used to get us over the line and to qualify.

Qualifying for Roy is the goal, he's not got the balls to say "we're not going to make this one, but we're going with youth and we'll have a far better chance at the next one"
I actually agree that lamps and gerrard should not play together, in fact id have a gerrard..carrick midfield with carrick dictating play and gerrard supplimenting him plus picking the right time to attack.
You coild easy swop gerrard for lampa
Carrick in a midfield 2 with Gerrard or Lampard is the stuff of nightmares. We all saw what happens when he plays alongside Giggs/Scholes!
.^^^^`.rd after the 60 min mark.
England play a 3, ignore me

Gerrard is more aggressive, quicker, stronger, in the tackle, in the air, a 50/50. Carrick has also not been great so far this season and has never performed for England.
Gerrard, as I said was brilliant on that role vs Brazil at Wembley.
Rob
That was 4 years ago, even Giggs was alright that long ago.
Of the 2 I've always preferred Lampard in the deeper role, think he did a great job away to Croatia when Walcott got the hat-trick, but again that was a long time ago.
I'm Carrick's biggest fan but I wouldn't start him tonight.
It's fricking Moldova! His type of player isn't needed tonight and I don't think he played in the return fixture in Moldova.
Carrick has played more for Hodgson than any other England manager and i'm sure he'll be used against Ukraine just as he was in Poland.

I agree he is more aggressive and stronger in the tackle but is that what we need when you can potentially have players like Wilshere and Cleverly playing alongside.
Carrick's game doesn't need to be aggressive or stronger simply because his positioning is so much better.
Surely we need to stop with the Roy of the Rovers attitude.
As much as I don't really like Gerrard, he should be in the team.
Darren
In your best England XI? Where would you play him? His game has changed massively over the past year or so. If we're gonna play 3 in the middle I would go for.
Carrick
Wilshere Cleverly
Good balance, you have enough mobility and pressing from Wilshere and Cleverly, a 3 that are comfortable on the ball and gives Carrick enough protection to do what he does best.
I agree, but we aren't going to change, everytime we all think the penny has dropped, the England manager goes back to old.
I still think Gerrard is good enough for that role, providing he does stay disciplined and stick to his job and keep his distribution simple. He is the captain so he is a starter in the World Cup, no point thinking otherwise.
Hopefully lamps doesn't go to Brazil.
------------------Wilshere---Carrick---------------------
------------Walcott---Gerrard---Welbeck-------------
-------------------------Sturridge--------------------------
That would be pretty tasty IMO.
Gerrard is still much better than Cleverley. I know he adds a bit more mobility and pace but Gerrard is still comfortably a better player for England.
Based on ability it should be Carrick, Gerrard and Wilshere in the middle. How it will work as unit against decent opposition I don't know.
Gerrard, Cleverley and Wilshere actually looked pretty good for Brazil, to be fair. But their midfield is gash.
BusbysBabes
I hear what you're saying but itsn't that quite a defeatist mentality. I understand Gerrard is captain so will start if fit but that isn't what I personally would like to see.
I've been impressed with Gerrard in his new role for Liverpool over the past year but I still think Carrick is far superior in that role. In fact I would say Lampard is better at the role too.

Could play Johnson, Richards, Welbs, Jones, Jagielka, Baines ect depending on form and development, but that's what us like to see in Brazil.
