Shaw was the best left back in the league last season, but Southgate wants to play a RB ahead of him?

But christ that defence is concerning

I don’t get it, chillwell would be my preferred choice but has done well this season too.

You guys just don't understand tactics. Trippier is at left back because he will spend most of his time facing backwards playing the ball back to the keeper. If it was a left footed player playing backwards facing left back then they would be an inverted backwards facing left back and would just cause problems.

Most journos are briefing the same line up. I get why he’s gone with that if true.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Mings who was horrible in the two warm up games and Trippier at LB? What is the decision behind those? I understand the rest to a degree.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
I’d have gone Chilwell instead, but he’ll have chosen Trippier due to the set pieces (which, to be fair, has worked well for him in the past).

Mount has a good delivery on him for corners and Harry Kane will demand to take free kicks outside the box probably. Sigh.
I am unconvinced that the value trippier will add from set pieces is greater than the value Shaw would add from open play but I guess it's international football and Southgate is going back to the 2018 formula

Why Mings? White is clearly a superior defender. Both heading into their first ever tournaments. Chuck White in there!
It's strange that Southgate is playing two defenders out of position. Trippier who should be at right back, and Mings who should be on his couch in Birmingham.

Yeah, it’s pretty deflating, isn’t it?
Southgate has kind of gone down the Garth Crooks Team of the Week approach with Trippier. He scored a goal against Croatia last time therefore he must be put in, even if it's at left back.
