Most teams can’t even get the ball off their midfield for extended spells in games.
---

My second team Spain gave them around 25% possession.

Not sure who I would have rather faced.
Spain or Italy?
Spain probably would've given us 0% possession.

I don't think they are that great actually.

Austria deserved to beat them, Italy were lucky.

Spain deserved to beat them, Italy were lucky.

Final was the toss of the coin, we scored a good goal they got lucky.

Jammy Italians tbh.

For all this talk of Italy deserving the win they managed 1 very jammy scrappy goal to get them to extra time and lucked out on penalties after getting away with murder kicking chunks out of our players all night

Basically the Argentina of Europe imho.

It's not stupid to say a team is due a loss after going unbeaten for 30+ games either, that's called statistics:

"the practice or science of collecting and analysing numerical data in large quantities, especially for the purpose of inferring proportions in a whole from those in a representative sample."

Every other team should have just given up participating and gone home. Italy hadn't been beaten in a long time so their name was already on the trophy.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Nobody’s saying that though? Merely that the idea that they were somehow “there for the taking” is a bit silly.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It was a pretty good chance to beat them in fairness. They were struggling to come to terms with us initially and why we took the lead.

The easy route backfired.

Austria game sorted out the Italians mentality what they needed.

Kind of sad the hosts were the most negative side in the tournament
----------------------------------------------------------------------

France were the last team to lose a final as hosts. They went on to win the world cup.

Hopefully England can do the same.........
----------------------------------------------------------------------
England are like Spurs though. Lots of false dawns and promise of winning something but they inevitably never do.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

That might be true as things stand, but it’s not why England lost tonight and has nothing to do with the next tournament. Fine margins tonight but we lost to the best team in the tournament.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Fine margins and negative tactics.

Yep and now we'll never know.

All because S|-|itgate wanted to defend and luck our way to the victory instead of just using home advantage, momentum and speed on the wings to actually play with some positivity.

It has absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with statistics; or with probability, for that matter.

Of course it was a good chance to beat them. But it was a long time to carry a lead and I actually think scoring so early might have been a disadvantage in the end. It meant that we could dominate for a while, run out of steam and then they could have ample time to settle and turn it around. Our set-up seemed to bank on our going ahead on 70 minutes, not 2.

Nope; still doesn’t

Here’s one for you:

I toss a coin 20 times, and each time it lands heads.

What are the odds that it lands heads next time?

What world are you living in ffs

You had one shot on target all night and six shots in total and bored the shat out of every game you played outside of the Ukraine game.

Italy quite literally had twice as many shots as you in this tournament. 128 to 64. Switzerland played two games less and managed more shots than you ffs

It doesn’t! Italy have gone unbeaten because THEY ARE HARD TO BEAT, not because someone keeps calling tails or something. That means that the next team to play them will find them HARD TO BEAT, not easy or easier because they are unbeaten! It’s ludicrous to think otherwise.

posted on 12/7/21

Italy deserved to win, went 1-0 up then tried to defend the lead rather than go for more goals, then inevitably got punished. We got to get better to compete with top teams instead of hoping we get a lucky decision or win on penalties

Imagine comparing flipping a coin to a 30+ match unbeaten run as if there is any relation

Have a little think about all of the macro & micro variables that influence the outcome of football matches. The longer you go without losing, the more likely it is that you will lose the next match. There are countless factors one could list but what's the point, you won't be able to wrap your ickle minds around it.

Sorry that you don't understand statistics.

Go read a book

The real World.

I watched all of those games in full. Everything I said is correct, not sure why you are firing off on stats about number of shots et al

Pickford did his best tonight, but.........
Southgate really went south with his choice of penalty takers, Sancho and Saka, and that was it.
You just have to make more than 2 out of 5 penalties.
Surely more experienced players like Shaw, Walker, even Sterling, can take PKs?
