Gerd Muller scored 398 goals in 453 games for Bayern Munich so he must be the best player ever by your criteria.

Why do people bang on about the world cup like it's the be all and end all of top flight football, it's really not.

Club teams are far more organised, balanced and play week in week out, forming much greater team chemistry. The fact that England have been in and around the top 5 international teams over the past decade or so shows how inferior international football is.

If you could somehow face any of the top club teams against the top international teams, I definitely know who I would be betting on.

No I agree it's pretty futile discussing who is better between players from different era. I just think Screen's reason (fitness) doesn't really hold up well. I think people can only really give a valid opinion on the players they have seen week in week out which is also why I think it's stupid when people claim players now are better when they clearly haven't seen anywhere near enough footage of players before.

A sport like athletics is a perfect example of how gradual improvements in science and fitness will lead to constant records being broken but that doesn't mean the athlete that competes now is a better athlete than ones from the past. I'm sure if Carl Lewis or Jesse Owen were around now and allowed to train with modern science etc their times would be way way faster.

1982, agree completely.

Maradona

115 goals in 259 appearances for napoli

Ronaldo

225 goals in 216 appearances for real

Messi

327 goals in 395 appearances for barca

there is not even a contest. Both messi and CR7 are equal or better than messi.

football maybe more physical, ball and pitch conditions maybe worse but CR7 and Messi have overwhelmingly out performed maradona. that too having to face more pressing and tactically astute opponents.

And you watched that did you?

It's also a pretty bad example to use as I'm pretty sure that's the game where Pele executed his famous dummy move, one of the most played pieces of footballing skill that beautifully show of the man's genius.

Can someone please post goals, assists and appearances stats for maradona's club career
----------------------------------------------
If you want to compare stats.... Try seeing how he improved Napoli, season by season. This wasn't a team at the top, like Barca, UTD or Real Madrid.

What he did was akin to joining, say, Fulham and completely transforming them , winning numerous trophies.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
the same can be said for cantona, that doesnt make him the best ever does it? stats are stats
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Pele - 3 world cups
Maradona - 1 world cup
Messi - 0 world cups
Ronaldo - 0 world cups
Original Ronaldo - 2 world cups.

Beat those stats Messi and Ron.

Fat Ronaldo is better than the show pony Ronaldo. FACT

Anyone who uses the 'x player has won more world cups so is therefor better' argument is a moron.

I'm guessing you're choosing to ignore these stats...

Gerd Muller

566 goals in 607 games for Bayern
68 goals in 62 games for Germany

3 European cup wins and one World cup win.

How do Messi or Ronaldo stand up to those stats?

If you watch the matches pele played, he was able to keep the intensity and pace throughout the 90 mins in most matches. that is not the norm for most of the opponents.

In any case my point is not about fitness, its about pressing. the players of pele/maradona era didnt press like the modern footballers do. this allows more time for quality players to execute their moves. do you disagree with this?

When you start using stats as your only reason to claim one player being better than another it becomes more than stupid.

Diego is the most fouled player in history. He dragged a very average team to win the world cup and took them to the final 4 years later. It took 5 players to mark him yet he still made space.

Messi is closest to him. Ron is behind. I'd even have fat Ronaldo over this one. Fat Ron was more skilled regardless what the facking stats say.

How can you quantify skills with stats. What stat will say you took out 5 men from the game allowing your team to win.

Pele? 1000+ goals. Boom.

You say it's obvious but in my experience of this site it's not actually that obvious.

I havent seen enough of Gerd Muller to make an opinion but the stats are superb.

since you have seen him play, do you think he is not as good as maradona?

is it trolling to debate that the best players of today are as good as the players in the past? I call that debating
