Who is our best CB pairing??

Skrtel and Agger for the next game, for me. Skrtel has been our best defender, making numerous blocks and last ditch tackles, with more yesterday and Agger deserves a chance again after Sakho's woeful performance yesterday.

Stick Toure and Sakho together in the cup game, see how they do.

Kolo is just as bad as Skrtel when it comes to shirt pulling in our box.

Our defenders need to be told to focus on the ball and not the opponent.

Agger has to be in there as a neutral, just dont understand it tbh.

i'd go with Kolo and Agger if it were me

How is Agger not starting games for you lot? He's by far your best CB and one of the best in the country. He's quality on the ball and your best header of the ball.

Agree 100% bungee. Kolo and sakho have to be our starting cb pairing. Skrtel is an accident waiting to happen.

Sorry but Agger has been dire when marking in set pieces. So many times he has snoozed and the person he marks has ended with a free header which has lead to goals numerous times last season and this season.

His ball quality is good but his lack of pace and strength aerially is very weak.

Agger is a fantastic ball playing defender. He is arguably the best in the Prem at doing this.

However, short term we have a problem. Defending crosses. We aren't great at it and a giant sticking plaster is needed to cover up some deficiencies in this area. Agger is not the answer. If Mourinho or anyone saw Agger in the team you know the ball would be swung under Mignolets cross bar at every opportunity.

We need to show we can defend crosses else teams will just continue to pile in knowing it is our weakness.

I'd go with kolo and sakho too, skrtels not been too bad though, his blocks and clearances he gets stuck in right away and likes to steal the ball quickly like Lucas and Koscielny his defending off set pieces is woeful tho but the whole teams is.

Johnson and Agger are worse, atleast skrtel is all over his man at least putting them under pressure. Agger and Johnson lose their man and the feckin ball.

Agger aerially weak? Behave yourselves. Losing a man on set pieces is down to a lack of concentration/tactical awareness, nothing to do with aerial ability. If you get to the ball and get beaten in the air, that's a different story (like what happened to Skrtel yesterday on Kompany's goal).

Also we should chuck in the offside trap from set pieces now and then and catch them offside instead of dropping deep all the time. Give them something to think about.

Kolo is useless in the air

Kamran Agger is woeful in the air.

posted on 27/12/13

He isn't. I haven't paid particular attention to whether or not he's any good at defending set pieces, but in an aerial duel, he doesn't get beaten easily.

Sakho wasn't particularly poor yesterday from what I saw, and is our best defender in a physical confrontation.

Him and Skrtel at the moment for me. Agger needs to earn his way into the team as does Toure. Put Agger and Toure together in the cup match and see how they do.

Sakho has been brilliant so far - can't drop him.

Sakho has a dodgy 15mins that it. Cant believe some people.

On current form though.

Skrtel/Sakho > Agger > Toure

Sakho is our best defender.

He had a mad 5 mins yesterday that's all.

His positioning, heading, blocking and passing are all excellent. He just looks awkward.

Toure was very good in August but hasn't been the same since his injury (albeit in few appearances).

Skrtel has been consistently good but it's no coincidence that our clean sheet record is awful whenever he plays.

Sakho is better than Agger, and BR obviously doesn't think they could play together (maybe tried it on training and neither can play right side centre back).

I would give Toure-Sakho a run of games to see if they do any better than the other pairings have done.

Sakho and Skrtel, that's the managers choice, he's sees them daily in training. Who am I to argue.

In a way, you are right. It is all about opinion. In this case I do agree with the manager though, the current pairing offers aggression and power which I feel is what is needed most in a very physical league for most games.
Other defenders offer different things but I'm not sure over a 38 game season whether it is enough.
Against ball playing sides maybe Agger is better than them both but then chopping and changing upsets the rhythm so I would rather stick with a pairing and only rest them for cup games maybe.

With Skrtel, I think he ticks all the boxes if you look at all the component parts of his game. He can run, he can tackle, he can head it, he looks the part.....but there seems to be something missing. The clever part for me is not there...his decision making. Sometimes you want your centreback to just do the basics right....kick it and head it. A centreback who is losing headers is no good to anyone.

Anyone saying Agger is good in the air does not watch our games. He's been my favourite defender for years but he has been shocking this season.

Agger and Skrtel are hopeless together. Their positional sense is so poor. My cousin is a coach and has been slating Skrtel for the last two seasons. I used to defend him with my Red tinted blinkers. I've taken them off now and fully agree.

Salvo has been outstanding so far. He made a couple of eras yesterday but yo can't blame him. He was told to go forward for corners and the midfield and full backs did not cover well enough.

We should not throw both central defenders forward at one time. One sits and one goes up.

I wold well one of Agger or Skrtel and buy another world class defender to play with Sakho. His pass completion and blocking stats have been better than most defenders in the league and he is still settling.
