Twitter and Facebook have over a billion active users. Isn't that a big enough sample size? Plus numerous extensive online surveys.

Kinda blows your facebook theory out the window

if you consider a facebook or twitter like the definition of a fan then fair enough, like I said I'll stick to actual fans, clicking a link on the internet does not equate to being a fan of a club. Fans who go to games and spend money on their clubs are proper fans the rest just take a passing interest

For all you know half of these 'fans' who like a club on facebook like several other clubs too, it is in no way at all, by any means ever a good way to judge a fanbase.

Look I don't care if Arsenal have a wider worldwide fanbase the vast majority of these 'fans' are not fans at all.

But if it makes you happy to convince yourself that Arsenal have the biggest fanbase ever based on social networking figures and some online surveys go for it, the rest of us rational and clear thinking folks, who actually are genuine fans will continue to support our club the proper way, by spending money on them and going to games, a real fan goes to see their team play live as that is the closest you can get to the club you support, those who don't well they like a club but they are not proper fans

I read somewhere that Liverpool were the 3rd most supported football club, after Real Madrid and Manchester United.

Arsenal and Chelsea didn't even make the top 10.

see op, and isn't this survey of a few thousand people? When China has what like a billion people living in it? that's a fairly reasonable ratio of a nation to deem it infallible proof

Arsenal most popular team in China
----------------------------------------

But not in the England.
What's your point? Shirt sales and new 'loyal' fans?

But TUX they liked it on facebook what more do you need to prove you are a true loyal fan

The Liverpool of old maybe when they were the best in league.

Liverpool global reach has regressed

Arsenal and Chelsea have been far bigger over last 10 years.

It's common knowledge

They're not proper fans Castor And as I said above these 'fans' probably support loads of European clubs.

Anyone who says Arsenal is more popular than Man Utd in China has something wrong with his numbers.

Facebook is banned in China as stated and 16000 fans is not exactly a huge cross section!

I have no idea how you'd tell who the best supported team is aside from social media. This list seems pretty good:
http://www.givemesport.com/407872-top-10-most-popular-teams-in-world-football

Liverpool come 7th. I have no idea how accurate that is but I'm sure it doesn't really matter. 7th, 17th or 107th - it never ceases to amaze me what fans will argue over.

70K crowd they drew for a friendly in a 93K capacity stadium in Australia
======================================

What happened to the other 25,000 people who reportedly turned up for that game at 100,000 seat capacity MCG ?

Edit:

It never ceases to amaze me what fans will point score over.

That's probably more accurate!

Gallup polls for US presidential races & political issues use a thousand people for a 300m population - so 16K for a 1.4 billion population is more than adequate.

Sorry, "common knowledge"?

You need to explain this in a lot more detail, backed up by facts
