'Bigness' is how much history, fans and income you have. Although recent success is very important, buying success does not make you 'big.'

You have to earn your success to be 'big.'

The key word in this question is 'bigness'

Is that a word?

If the question would have used the term 'greatness' then Liverpool would be first and United second.

However, the OP asks for us to arrange in 'bigness' which means United are top because of their worth and stature in the modern game.

One thing is for sure, the two north west giants are head n shoulders above the rest of the country.

Why?

Why would England's second most successful side be "greater" than England's most successful team?

Arsenal have won more domestic competitions than Spurs.

Spurs have won more European competitions than Arsenal.

Arsenal - big on the small stage.

Spurs - bigger than Arsenal on the big stage.

Anyway, I will happily admit Arsenal have a far more impressive record with league championships than Spurs.

What I don't understand is why Chelsea are being ranked as a bigger club than Tottenham. This is tiny club from Fulham who were no bigger than West Ham before they sold their soul to Russian Big Oil.

There is a fine chance Man City will win the Champions League sometime in the next 5 or 10 years. When they do, does that mean they are bigger than Arsenal? No, just a tiny club who paid for every trophy.

Isn't that a list of all the clubs that have won a trophy over the last six years- oh, apart from Arsenal of course. By the way, you've forgotten portsmouth and Birmingham.

In what way are Liverpool historically more important than Man U?

Man U have won more titles than Liverpool (59 vs 58), more league titles, more FA Cups, more FA Youth Cups, were the first English team to win the European Cup, were the inaugural and 5-consecutive winners of the FA Youth Cup and only side in England to have won the treble.

Can you please inform me why Liverpool are historically more important than Man U?

-------

probably because you've confused yourself.

Liverpool have more major honours.

We can't exactly include the charity shield can we? That would be silly. Afterall, it's a... well.. a charity match.

We've also achieved this without having to be the worlds richest club alongside Real - you know this to be true.

In the modern game, victory means money which means it's easier to remain at the top.

Plus, our supporters are revered around Europe whilst yours are slagged off by your own player (see Roy Keane)

Sorry, the opinion of glory hunters is completely irrelevant to me. I Have decided to supported Real Madrid. I support a bigger club than you, yay! I win.

I can't really argue that United shouldn't be top, and while Arsenal have been pretty much on a par with Liverpool for the last 15-20 years our history isn't as glamorous, so they get second. Chelsea and Man City have both had to spend a lot to win of late but do have some glorious moments from the past.

Spurs just do nothing, and haven't won the league for 50 years

You mean a few fans in the Liverpool end got all British clubs banned from Europe. There was trouble causers from all over at that game!

Grow up!

Probably Man Utd on top.
Manyoomanky refers us to Wiki but the Wiki table includes Charity Shields, Euro Super Cups and Intercontenintal Cups.
Removing this for a clearer picture and we get;

Domestic:
Man Utd : 34
Liverpool : 32

European:
Liverpool : 8
Man Utd : 5

So, pretty much even on success but Man Utd's is more recent so they'd be 1st on my list.

After Man Utd and Liverpool there'd be a big gap to Arsenal and Chelsea with Spurs and Man City further adrift.
