So, no CL is an advantage then
Already knew that.
Typical Guardian WAFFLE !
I find myself agreeing with the top comment on that article...
'There may be a certain amount of sour grapes at play here, but what happened to romance in football?
Why keep flogging this horse that somehow there is romance involved in Liverpool one of the biggest clubs in the country winning the league and every man and their dog would love to see them when the league, when quite frankly it isn't true.'
---------
And then there's this peach -
'Check the comments on these sport blogs over the past couple of weeks and there are suggestions, presumably coming from Manchester, that going for the title while not competing in Europe is tantamount to cheating.'
Which is absolute horseshíte. Just because winning the league with no CL football is undoubtedly an advantage (NOT an unfair one!) does NOT mean that the fans of the Manchester clubs think it's cheating. Long story short, the article is bóllocks.
This year you could make the argument that Liverpool are back as a top 4 club but really seeing how you perform next season will be the proof.
We have made less games at the end of the season by improving the players that most thought were not good enough to get into the top four let alone win the league.
Not much was made of this 'advantage' at the start of the season as we were written off.

-------
I'd say it's levelled the playing field
Those in the champions league last few seasons would have had their pick of players while we were getting turned down by mikhitaryan etc..
Thereby Liverpool not being in Europe means our sparse resources could be better utilised.
If clubs who are in Europe think they could have gained an advantage from not being in Europe - they should have flunked out then. Simple really. Unless they thought they could do both competently.
True enough ARE, if anyone can show themselves saying Liverpool have a massive advantage at the start of the season please step forward!
Everyone was saying we couldn't compete because we couldn't get quality players as they'd want to play in the champions league.
I however will step forward, I said this would be a definitive season for Rodgers as without travelling every couple of days, Rodgers could put in lots of work on the training field to put his ideas and methodology across.
I will take another step forward and say that as those ideas and methods will have been put across, we will cope with both champions league and premier league football next season. As we will already have a very firm foundation to build on.

Red....spot on. If getting £40M from the CL per season and a as much money as you want, and the pick of europes best aint good enough for the likes of cfc..city..arsenal then id say its mismanagement not liverpools lack of games thats the difference.

Its not as simple as that though is it GB.
We have the same advantage as every other Premier league club without European footy.
Its not as simple as that though is it GB.
------
I'd say it is...
Mourinho has spend big money on Matic Salah and Willian, sent Lukaku on loan, but hasn't addressed the striker problem.
Bit of mismanagement there.
Arsenal total mismanagement from Wenger when riding clear at the top of the league
Man City have a very balanced team but are still coming together, and will do.
'There may be a certain amount of sour grapes at play here, but what happened to romance in football?"
Why keep flogging this horse that somehow there is romance involved in Liverpool one of the biggest clubs in the country winning the league and every man and their dog would love to see them when the league, when quite frankly it isn't true.'
--------------------
You're reading what you want to read here Jay. The romance isn't Liverpool winning the league, it's a team who were 7th last year winning the league.
"To win the title from seventh, if that is what Liverpool end up doing, ought to be welcomed as a remarkable feat regardless of the number of games played."
The same would be said if it was Spurs or Everton challenging for the league with 4 games to go.
I think it has obviously helped Liverpool by playing less games, I think it is 39 so far this season.
However, having said that I do feel that this should in no way devalue the team's achievement this season. Liverpool have been superb & are deservedly at the top by virtue of being the best footballing team over the season.
Yes, next season might be more defining by being in the CL, but as pointed out in early posts being in the CL enables you to attract better players etc.
It is also good to see how the players have embraced Brendan Rodgers philosophy & style of play. The key again is to hold on to both Suarez & Sterling, Couthino et al going forward, because as sure as anything is offers will be made by the money clubs come the end of May.
It is refreshing to see a "new face" leading the table & I for one hope it remains that way & Liverpool win their first PL title!
More fool them if they even think the're careers will develop further at an oligarch clyb.
LFC is the best place for them right now in a footballing sense, more money will be available elsewhere if thats more important to them.
Sterling and Coutinho will stay, and I think Suarez will as well.

Quite possibly, if it were Everton, or possibly Spurs (though I disagree), but what is 'romantic' about one of the teams with the highest spend, bigger fanbases & massive history, winning the league? Surely, for a club of Liverpool's stature, challenging should be 'almost expected'? It's hardly like they're a Villa or West Brom doing it, is it? I disagree with the way your challenge has been portrayed in some media outlets.
I know it hasn't happened for a while, but now they are all seemingly ignoring the other challengers.
"However, having said that I do feel that this should in no way devalue the team's achievement this season. Liverpool have been superb & are deservedly at the top by virtue of being the best footballing team over the season."
This is the crux of my point with regards to the 'less games' thing. Yes it's helped, but why should it matter?
It's romantic that a club who finished 7th has gone on to win the league, not that it's Liverpool. Keep up Jay, seriously, it couldn't be any clearer.
We may well have one of the highest spends but it is less that City, Utd, and Chelsea in terms of transfers this season. Our wages are less than Arsenal, Utd, Chelsea and City too.
Spurs spent over £100m this season so why are'nt they sitting up top?
It's romantic that a club who finished 7th has gone on to win the league, not that it's Liverpool. Keep up Jay, seriously, it couldn't be any clearer.

Could go on ^^ I'm disagreeing with that though, if it weren't Liverpool, then maybe I'd agree (i.e. an Everton, or similar, who have far less pedigree). But it is, a team who are famed for having had dominance over the English league, and Europe for around 2 decades.
Romanticism is teams like Accrington Stanley winning the FA Cup, not one of the most successful teams in English football history having a good season. and I know you said it was because of '7th going to the top' but in this case, I don't believe you can separate the 2.
highest spend, bigger fanbases & massive history, winning the league?
------
Highest spend? We don't have the highest spend, we wouldn't even pay more than £2.5m for Dempsey (though that was a good decision)
Big fan bases / history don't count for much in the age of money. Going forward this might be good where FFP is concerned though.

You could try quoting me properly.....
You have one of the higher spends in the league over the last few years (Behind United, City, Chelsea & Spurs, I believe)
So fifth highest spend by your reckoning, in terms of actual £ amounts it may be quite low..
Rodgers has basically added Sakho, Allen, Coutinho and Sturridge to the squad.
All very good players..
