Great Dominate Team = High Line = Fast Defenders

Thanks for the service Vida.

Although he will be missed It could be a blessing in disguise he's going. We need to be careful not to turn into AC Milan and keep players way too long, especially in this transitional phase. His high wages are also better off being invested elsewhere given his injury problems

He was immense today. 12 headed duels won (100%), 19 clearances, 1 tackle won, 5 interceptions, 44 passes completed (90%).

Really can't help but think he'd be ideal for another season. You need so many other positions this summer it'd be nice not to add cb to the list.

Add to that you have young CBs coming through who aren't ready yet, but would hugely benefit from a season seeing how Vidic does his thing.

I do tire with this flawed beyond comprehension kind of logic. The young defenders have learnt whatever they can learn about from Vidic, Rio and co by now. The next thing is to play regularly and get the experience that made the likes of vidic so special. That will not happen if when they mess up you run back to vidic screaming "hug me! make me feel safe!".

This is the same story with our midfield and how scholes and giggs experience will allow our midfielders gradually grow into their roles when In actuality we had to clear out pretty good players for them to grow into their roles. Do not want to get into it but scholes and giggs and ultimately fergie are the problems to our midfield. When they were meant to handover, like was done years before for them, they were not just allowed to go. They hovered and put unnecessary pressure on the players and gave fergie "hug me! make me feel safe!" feeling.

We have to start letting go of the past before it drags us back. Liverpool should be such a vivid example of what could happen if we do not.

Yeah but you have other defenders coming through like Keane? And Jones and Smalling need a season as actual CBs too.

Just when you consider you could use a new LB, arguably a RB, two new CMs and a winger, it would make more sense to hold on to a proven capable CB rather than add it to the list this summer.

Just how I see it anyway

He maybe proven, but he is not the same defender anymore. slower, smaller, has lost his leap. He is experienced and that is just about the only thing that counts for him. He can only get worse.

The likes of keane and co can learn from smalling and evans what has been taught to them for the past 3-7 yeara playing together with them. Just how much a player learns from another player is a question that should be asked.

Personally I wouldn't want anyone learning from Smalling just yet.

Maybe he can't offer what he used to, but what he can is still valuable, plus given his age others will get a fair amount of game time.

For me, given the option it'd make sense to keep him for another year.

COMPLETELY DISAGREE.

Centre back is a precarious position because you only really get better by learning alongside an experienced, seasoned pro - its where you get your confidence and leadership abilities from.

Kolo Toure learned from Sol Campbell.
John Terry learned from Desailly

You need that tutelage in my opinion - can't be having Jones learning from Smalling - United won't get top 4 with two inexperienced CB's.

Also - I don't rate Jones.

Here is some research for you. Go do a measure of how many years of overlap exist between the tutor and student on these teams. I doubt it is more than 3 years in both cases. For smalling this is the 5th year, evans the 8th? Yet they are still not ready to take over?

While you are at it, check if the tutor was playing INSTEAD of the student or WITH them together. Check just how regularly the student played and I bet you that is the better reason for them changing from young defender to starter.

Even if they do not have the talent to actually take over, then we need new defenders then who we will buy for tons of money so they won't need any lessons from vidic. Just the same sentimentality bullsheet wrapped in punditry logic.

The thing is, both Rio and Evra are more of a liability than Vidic and yet their futures haven't been resolved yet.

Most likely scenario is that 3 of our best back 4 will be leaving in the summer, it would have personally been better if Rio and Evra left and Vidic stayed for 2 years.
